The carpet installer, forty years ago, was a maniac with staples on my old basement stairs. Two types of staples. The dilemma was the teeny-weeny copper(?) color, short width staples. They are flush, at best, and most just under the surface. The long pointy prong tool with the screwdriver handle works very well and far quicker than anything else I've tried. It's the right little point and angle to do the job on regular and teeny-weeny staples. The new tool has not bent or broken. It has stayed very sharp and easily worked under the staple to pry it back and out. Not a problem for my arthritic hands or wrists.One warning is, I'm doing crummy old basement stairs that will be recovered with something. For more visible "good" stairs, you would have to work slowly and carefully to not have any slips or gouges. FIVE STARS for this tool. Highly recommend. (Wear work gloves and eye-wear.)The second tool --not so much. Unless a typical size staple is sitting off the wood, there is no way that will get under it. When you squeeze the handle the angle changes and puts your knuckles against the wood, giving no leverage. The way it looked, I thought there was a spring. There isn't. Maybe mine is broke. Unless you have an easy job, I would not recommend.

This was a sanity saver for removing the staples from some chairs I wanted to reupholster! We also used them to remove staples from some stairs. This is a must have!

Ok, I usually don't write reviews but this has been a life saver. I was losing my mind during my first upholstery project and nothing seemed to get those damn staples out.But with this? Easy peasy, gets under the tightest of staples and the thickest fabric. Both tools always manage, and with pliers on the side for those pesky staples that break I flew through my project.This saved my mental health as a side effect. 10/10 do recommend.

Love the black pronged tool. It will get out carpet staples from a 3/4 inch oak floor with ease. The tool is outstanding. Staples were embedded in the wood. A filed down screw driver couldn't even get the staples out.The other tool was worthless for my needs. The end was too think to get under a staple.
