They’re screws

I needed these in brass, to make a precision tool. The brass won't mar the steel because it is softer than the steel. They seemed to be very loose in the threaded hole? Yes, they only have 48.2 % of the thread depth! That is really poor and unacceptable. A 3.0 x 0.5 mm screw should have a "root diam" of 92.8 mils, a full thread diameter of 118,1 mils. The difference is 25,3 mils. The first thumbscrew I measured, had 105 mils as the diameter, that is 13 mils smaller than it should be. So the thumbscrews tilt quite obviously. They almost fall of of the threaded hole.A standard hole for a female thread ( a nut ) has a 78% thread, because cutting it deeper, is much harder and tends to break the taps.Screws should have very close to full 100% thread, because a die cuts a screw thread and it is much sturdier.Having a 50% thread on a screw is unacceptable.I did a set of measurements on the 8 screws and on 5 random screws in my shop. The screws average 2.74mm diam with a % thread of 59.8%, and a Std Dev of 0.7mm and 10% dev.Normal screws average 2.94mm diam with a % thread of 90.2%, and a Std Dev of 0.02mm and 3% dev.Clearly, they are undersize and vary a lot. I am going to return them.

The first one I tried out of the bag was too small for the mating threads. So, I figured my hole must be M4. But, I measured all of the "M3" screws in this package and found the OD of the threads varied from 2.66mm to 2.86mm. I managed to find two in the bag that worked for my application. I don't believe they were mis-packaged since there were not two distinct sizes. The sizes varied in the range between 2.66mm and 2.86mm.
