When I was making wine in the 70's I had a better filter but parted with it and haven't seen one like it since. But (accounting for inflation) this is less expensive and I think this does a decent job. Don't forget your pectin enzymes; especially if you're making hard cider, as I did.Serious wine makers won't touch this and, quite possibly, careful racking with no filtration may be superior. But for a guy like me who just wants to celebrate the harvest, this was very helpful. If I wanted clear cider I could have re-filtered (they provide six) but I was satisfied with the reduction in yeasty aftertaste after the first session. And if I can get decent results with pectin laden cider, then a home wine maker should be able to improve on that, hugely.Someone put excellent thought into this filter, with ease of use in mind. The instructions are very clear. In fact, I advise ordering this well before you need to use it, because the directions clearly spell out what you can do, prior to filtration, that will make filtration easier and more effective.SUMMARY:If you're making wine on a budget, you want this. If you're making hard cider and you're NOT on a budget, buy this filter, champagne yeast, pectic enzyme and an airlock. You'll end up with a drink that's barely palatable but that honors the colors and sunlight of autumn.

I got it because I didn't want to set up my whole big filter for one gallon batches, but soon started using it for five gallons as well. This thing is probably the cheapest and easiest way to introduce filtering into your homebrew. ONCE CLARIFIED, this filter will give a nice professional looking polish to your beer or wine. One pad is good for one five gallon batch. The only drawback is you can't save the filter medium if you only use one gallon so it feels like I'm throwing away 4/5ths of the cost of a pad when I only do one gallon, but they aren't crazy expensive and the results are well worth it.

The Vinbrite filter worked as advertised. The only issue was of my own making, I let too much sediment build up before I changed to a new filter pad, so it ran slow. Once I put in a new pad it worked great and the white Riesling came out very clear.

Got the job done perfectly, used it to clear out a batch of mead and it's crystal clear. It can be a bit messy at first, but once you figure it out, it's worth the money and the time.

Pros is this filter works well, the bundle price for filter and pads aren't bad, it works and does what it supposed to do. Cons, a couple tweaks and it can be a much better filter and the replacements pads are a bit pricey.

Bought this filter for mead and wine making. Had great reviews. used it twice with the included fine filter pads. now I need more fine filter pads and no one sells them unless I order from the UK. Now this filter is useless without the ability to replace the fine filter pad. Had I known this before purchase i would have bought something else.

For the most part, it gets the job done. It does not sit right on the carboy though, which means I have to sit there holding it. Also, if it is not in a perfect position, the wine does not flow through evenly and takes forever. The other problem is that the tubing it comes with fits perfectly on the top of the kit, but is a PAIN to connect to the siphon. I tried using a little bit wider tube that came with the siphon, but it was slightly too big for the filter. Every once in a while, the larger tube would pop off the filter and spill wine everywhere. Very frustrating. As someone who had just started out doing wine at home and using this filter, it was all trial and a lot of error. If you get this kit and are fairly new at wine making, practice with it first or at least use a cheaper wine so you don't feel as bad losing any of it.Also, they give you some of the pads, but you fly through them (especially with reds) and the 6 packs for replacing them are $11+, which adds up after a while. It is not too bad with the whites though.Currently looking for alternative filtering kit.
