Window well ladders are a necessary addition to any egress window well with a vertical depth greater than 44 inches below the adjacent ground level.
Until now, finding one that is quick to install and cost effective was a challenge.
Our mounting (Model WWL-W) window well ladder is designed to accommodate a wood, brick, or concrete window well with a depth of 4 to 5 feet in depth and is easily assembled with six (6) included bolts and a 7/16” wrench (not included).
Window Well Ladder Extensions are available for window wells that exceed 5ft in depth.

The Adjust-A-Grate Window Well Ladder is made of tempered aluminum which will not rust and will not require painting to protect it from the weather elements. This ladder, unlike its metal well sister product, is designed for use with non-metal wells such as wood timbers, concrete block, or poured concrete wells. This model requires that the installer of the ladder be able to properly mount the ladder into one of the sides of the well with the proper anchors or screws (not included) and in the proper location to meet municipal building codes.

What is the difference between the WWL and WWL-W Models?
The Model WWL is designed with aluminum hooks to hang over the lip of a metal well. The hooks require 1” of the metal well to be above ground to properly hook over the well. Once in position, the hook ensures the top rung of the ladder is 18 inches from the top of the well. The Model WWL-W on the other hand is designed for use with brick, concrete, or wood window wells where the grate must be mounted, as the hook can not accommodate a thicker well wall. This model requires that the installer of the ladder be able to properly mount the ladder into one of the sides of the well with the proper anchors or screws (not included) and in the proper location to meet municipal building codes.
Does this ladder meet code?
Both the WWL and WWL-W models are designed to meet the IRC Code when installed properly. Some municipalities will add additional requirements above and beyond the IRC code so check your local codes to determine if this solution is appropriate for you. It is also important to note that window wells that exceed 60” (5 ft) of depth will require ladder extension kit(s) to be compliant with the IRC. The current International Residential Code reads:
- R310.2.1 Ladder and steps. Window wells with a vertical depth greater than 44 inches (1118 mm) shall be equipped with a permanently affixed ladder or steps usable with the window in the fully open position. Ladders or steps required by this section shall not be required to comply with Sections R311.5 and R311.6. Ladders or rungs shall have an inside width of at least 12 inches (305 mm), shall project at least 3 inches (76 mm) from the wall and shall be spaced not more than 18 inches (457 mm) on center vertically for the full height of the window well.
What if my well is deeper than 5 feet?
Adjust-A-Grate offers the Model WWL-X as a 1-foot extension that can be added to either the WWL or WWL-W models. The extensions are assembled in the same manner as the existing steps in the current ladder and then ends (as described in the instructions) are moved to the bottom of the after all extension segments have been added.
Are the ladders permanently affixed to the well?
Model WWL includes two sheet metal screws and instructions to permanently mount the ladder to the well as described in the directions to be compliant with IR Code. Mounting the ladder does require the ability to drill through the ladder. The Model WWL-W does not include mounting hardware but does need to be permanently affixed to the well appropriately for your window well material to be compliant with IR Code.

Strong, easy to install. Be aware of weight limits , and number of rungs. For saftey reason there should be one in every window well.

I needed a ladder for the egress window well in our basement. The well is a little too deep for my kids to pull themselves up and out of, and if we ever had a fire I wouldn't want them stuck in the egress well unable to get up onto the lawn. This ladder came in a small box and went together fairly easily. It is a little putzy but anyone with basic skills and a few hand tools can easily assemble this in a few minutes. It fits really well in our egress well but the steps are not very deep. I works and allows me or my kids to get up and down, but I wish the steps were a little deeper. I have size 12 feet and I have to turn them well to the side to go up and down this ladder. It is also a bit pricey for me considering it is just a few piece of metal and some bolts. However, it was cheaper than most of the other ones I looked at and it does what I need it to, which is get somebody up and out of the egress window well in an emergency. If you find one that is more robust and/or cheaper, I would pass on this one. But if you need something to just get the job done (and hopefully you'll never have to actually use it), then go for it.

Easy to assemble. Have not installed it yet. From what I see, I like it.I just installed it, tested it, and for the price, would buy it again.

Lightweight and easy to assemble. I wouldn’t want this to be something I had to climb everyday but it meets code and will get someone out of a window well in an emergency. As long as you’re not using it as a way to get into your house everyday; it’s great! This is the cheapest ladder you’ll find and I have no complaints.

Technically it does work. However if you plan to ever use it you will be disappointed. You will be stepping on the tiny narrow straps of metal. With shoes on it's even really awkward to stand on. All the pressure is on an area of your foot the size of a couple quarters stacked. They could have easily designed the steps to be more chunky to make the product more useful. I use the ladder to get debris out of the window well, wash the window, etc.

Pretty solid. I asked my 10 year old son to put them together and to my surprise he did it with ease. We hung them up and they are good quality
