It was a gift sent to the other side of the country, sounds like it is a hit not miss. Mentioned it's sharp enough.

The leather carrying pouch is a very nice touch, it feels like actual leather. The carving tools are all very sharp, it did pass the cutting off the hair in the arm test. The metal seems pretty good, nit sure what type it is, as it's not stated anywhere. I'm not sure how far the tang of the tools goes, but it seems to be firmly in there with no wobble. They have included a sharpening strop and compound. Really add to the plug and play aspect of this set. The handles are made of a light soft wood. Which is the only thing I don't like about them, that's a personal preference though. Overall, a a good set and seems to be adequately prices.

I have a confession to make: I did not get these to carve wood. I’ve been looking for some sturdy, heavy-duty carving tools to use for carving pumpkins. A couple of years ago, I bought a relatively nice set of tools designed for carving pumpkins, and while they are better made than the cheap, flimsy sets you can get everywhere in the weeks leading up to Hallowe’en, they were, well, odd. Several of the tools had shapes that I couldn’t make much sense of, and there were no tools for gouging. I remember having a set of tools as a kid that were for linoleum carving, and those sure had gouges. I wanted to be able to cut troughs in the pumpkin that--if deep enough--would allow light to shine through. This really opens up the possibilities for jack-o-lanterns, because you can, for example, gouge a circle, but if you were to cut a circle all the way through, the whole thing would just fall out.Anyway, this set of wood-carving tools has some that I won’t be using on pumpkins (like the whittling knives), but the small-detail knives are the ones that are perfect for pumpkin-carving, especially the u-shaped and v-shaped gouges. The tools all have protective plastic covers and are very well made, with wooden handles. The set comes in an impressive leather* bag with pouches for storage, and it can be rolled up and tied. The set comes with a sharpening strop, polishing compound, and safety gloves. I am not sure how much protection the gloves would provide if you were to slice directly into them, but they are thick and feel good.*Note: it’s hard to find this information, but the leather is imitation. The webpage does refer to it in one place as PU [polyurethane] leather.I think this set would make a wonderful gift for anyone interested in carving wood or other things. It’s enough to make me want to whittle. In the meantime, I’ve had a chance to try it out on my Hallowe’en pumpkin, although I didn’t have much time to come up with a great design. But I was able to gouge deep troughs that let light through (see picture). I am very happy to have this set, and I will try to find out what some of the other tools are intended for.

I got these to see if I could use them in pottery. There may be some I can use but I have to get someone to explain what the tools are used for. They come in a very nice case and they all fit in nicely. Look to be good quality.

This is a really nice beginning (to intermediate?) wood carving kit. Nice price to be a gift, decent quality metal tools to actually carve with, and a (fake) leather roll-up case for it. This is NOT something I'd get for someone who knows wood carving (because I certainly do NOT, and really can only verify that for my "stoopid" hands (in terms of wood carving), these are good tools.I'm positive they aren't "the greatest", but it's a freaking beginners kit-- and the cost reflects that-- but for someone who wants to just start out, and learn-- HIGHLY recommended. A great place to begin.

The whittling tools and the carving knives have solid wood handles that are sturdy and shaped well making them easy to hold and maneuver. The ergonomic handles fit in my hand solidly and it makes it so easy to work with. I have the confidence that I am not going to slip and damage my project or hurt myself. This would be a great set for a beginner, but an experienced wood crafter would appreciate the quality and the control of these tools.
