It has a high resistance to heat and corrosion, and will respond well to hardening by cold working. Made up of 8 percent nickel and 18 percent chromium, it has good oxidation resistance when used in temperatures up to 1,600°F. This 304 stainless steel meets ASTM A276 specifications.

Bottom line up front: the overall dimensions (4" x 6" x 1/2" thick) are approximately correct, but the edges are unfinished and will need to be machined down if you require a square edge and / or specific thickness at the edge of the piece. The picture shows the edges as unfinished but reasonably square and full-thickness across the width of the bar. The bar I received has unfinished edges also, but they are not at right angles to the top and bottom faces, and also are not the full thickness of the plate.Measuring across the top of the bar, the width is 3 15/16". Across the bottom, it is 3 7/8". Thickness of the edges are approximately 7/16" thick, only reaching the full 1/2" thickness about 1/4" from the edge on both sides. What this means is, the edges are approximately 3-4 degrees off-square. In the case of the bar I received, it will balance on one edge with a definite tilt; it will fall over if I try to stand it on the other edge as there's also a definite convex curve on the edge. If you require a square edge of consistent thickness along the sides, you will need to machine off about 1/4" from each side, leaving you with under 3 1/2" width on the bar.I was expecting to make a cut along the edge to square and clean it, but I am irritated at having to remove quite this much. It will still work for my purposes, but I can't say I'm happy with this.
