This is a beautiful instrument! Great sound with or without the mallets. I am a musician, and I am very impressed with the craftsmanship and sound this produces. The notes are C major, starting and ending on E (E Phrygian), and I appreciate the 2 octave range. Pretty much anything you play on this is going to sound good, so this is great for musicians and non-musicians alike. A truly beautiful instrument!

Easy to learn, beautiful sound. The only downside is memorizing which note is which if you want to play songs other than the ones provided. The tongues are identified by numbered stickers 1-7, with dots to denote the octaves. 1 is C. It would be nice if it came with classical note stickers A-G for easy translation. I also hated the rubber finger mallets as they seem to be made for people with sausage fingers and no way to adjust for smaller hands. The best way to play for me is using the stick mallets, it just takes more practice to speed up.

I love the way this drum looks. I like the sound most of the tongues make, but since I don’t have a musical background, I do now know if it sounds the way they should. The case is made well. Nicely padded, with an easy to use zipper and a long strap. There is also a case for the mallets. I purchased this to teach myself how to play it by numbers. I also ordered additional music for it, as I did not know what some of the songs that came in the booklet were supposed to sound like.

This is a great drum with fifteen notes including one in the center. It's magnetic, so if you want to buy yeodymium magnets and lower some of the tones, you can. I even removed one of the rubber feet, and the size of the hole is enough to let a quarter-inch guitar jack come through, so I installed a pickup from www.idiopan.com which really brings out the frequencies. I bought model Stdpu100, because that goes with the large Idiopan drums. Now to spend time learning how to play with this arrangement, as it's different from other tongue drums.

I love everything about it! It’s a very good quality instrument for the price. The sound it produces when played with the mallets is outstanding, very soothing and calming. I’m planning to learn several songs and offer to play them when my therapy dog and I visit local care centers and the hospice house.

Only useful as a paper weight.Very disappointed.I googled reviews and found that the Hopewell brand was recommended, I purchased it and it is far superior in sound quality and tuning.

I fully intended to use this in my music projects, after learning to play it. First, I am used to notes arranged in order (picture a piano keyboard, or any music staff with a scale). I couldn't tell from the pics and descriptions, and this was my first tongue drum, so now I know better. That isn't why I lowered the rating though, a tongue drum is a tongue drum, and now I understand the concept better. They said this is in the key of C, so I also assumed (wrongly) that it was a C scale, maybe starting at a fifth below (G). However, the low note is E. The highest note is E. Both of these notes were unusable. No discernible pitch, no discernible tone quality. I did try for a week, to love it. I liked it okay, but I didn't love it and could not use it, so I ended up sending it back. This review has a "rate features" area. I have no idea why I had to rate "thickness" and "giftable." It was pretty heavy and thick, and if someone wants a tongue drum and isn't too picky, it would be giftable.

The drum is a little heavier than expected but beautiful look. The tone is very close in tonal quality. The lowest note does not have a pure tone that I have found yet, but all others are great sound.
