My favorite TIG helmet, name ends in son, was bought expressly for TIG, but sometimes didn’t seem dark enough. I added a slightly tinted lens to it, despite the assurances it was fine by an instructor and the people who sold it to me.To try this lens, I did not disassemble my “…son†helmet, I used an HF one. I don’t think it mattered which helmet, but I am sure that somebody will bring some obscure measurement that the angle of incidence at which the HF lens has is not the optimal one that the brand name one employs. I felt it was better than the alternative, which was to put it on a stick. In a slight deviation from my usual procedures, I did not duplicate the exact conditions in which I would be using this lens. I am limited to how I can move and where I can go. So, a pocket TIG was brought to me. My son had cleaned a piece of 12 gauge sheet steel for me.And suddenly, there would be a new deviation. Some stupid, worthless, idiot (uh, >meSo, I cranked up this new lens to 13. *POP!* Oh my, that was nice! At 13, the arc had a slight color. So, I tried 12, Still a bit of color. At 11, it was colorless. But I felt much more comfortable at least 12. So, it is confirmed, I am a wuss. I am probably protected at 10 and certainly at the 11 my main helmet is certified to be. I don’t see how being too dark is a problem. It is powered by rechargeable batteries, solar powered by the arc and sunlight. They even recommend pointing the lens towards a light, such a lamp that is turned on daily, if I don’t use it a lot. They know me. They enclosed an extra lens protecting glass. I told you they know me. It looks professional from all angles and isn’t embarrassing like some lenses I have tried.I love the versatility of this lens. I have infinite settings for the shade. The reaction time is second to none. The cool down time, the amount of time the shade remains after the arc stops is adjustable. For me, this helps me as part of the follow through at the end of a string of coins. Yes, my welds really do look a pile of coins. Coins of all denominations from all about the world, including old oriental ones you could hang on a cord. One day, I will get better. I’m in my 70’s, so the time is NOW. Really, I’m not THAT bad. (Full disclosure, yes, I am. Unless it is stick welding. That is something that I take pride in.)I gave this lens 5 stars. A great value compared to the everyday knock-offs and a contender against some brand name lenses. Compared to lenses $10 or $15 less, this is a world apart. Compared to the ones that I purchased for even less, this is in a different universe.

I got this to replace the old green tint lens in my old welding helmet so I could re-purpose it for plasma cutting, and since I had no idea what shade to get, an adjustable shade seemed like a good idea! This fit the 2x4-1/4 opening in my old helmet just fine and it works GREAT! It reacts very fast, and I have it adjusted so I can see what I am doing and it's not too bright for my eyes. It's SO much better than the old green tinted version! I have another helmet I use for welding and it's really great to just leave this one set for plasma cutting and the other one set for welding. I also have another separate clear face guard for grinding so I don't need to fiddle with any settings, and I always have the proper protection without having to remember what settings worked best. The view though this is SO nice and clear and I am VERY happy with the quality of it!

This auto dark 3-13 lens replacement is true to advertised size. This is perfect if you want it to fit in a thinner rounded (I thinnk they call it pipeliner) style helmet (see my pics ). Great value if you want to have the automatic shade protection and newest style "True color" visibility while welding. I never knew welding light was so pretty until I tried these true color style auto dark lenses. The technology has advanced quite a bit in the last 10 years or so when I bought my first green auto dark lens. It comes with (2) plastic screen protector for the outer layer and is of the same quality as anything else I have seen in its class. (These lenses are not designed for impact which is why it comes with a clear plastic lens to protect the sensitive bits from flying debris and sparks. You cannot install a plastic protector on the inside as this will block the access to the 3 dial controls. I would also suggest trimming the outer shield frame as it partially blocks out the solar cells. (see my pics.)

This kind of comes down to a cost /benefit ratio. For what this is meant for ,It’s pretty pricey. But like me, if you’ve got a favorite helmet I certainly understand replacing the failed unit in the old helmet, that’s what I did. I don’t use my old helmet as much as I do my new helmets and they have much better views, they are larger. And a much better price point for what you’re getting so it’s kind that benefit ratio thing again,. So the unit itself gets a five stars, no complaints, high-quality functions as well, Great settings. It’s just really small viewing area by today’s standards and there’s so much more out there.

So I’ve been using the old green type auto darkening helmets for years now and always hatted them, and then I got this little guy and boy howdy does it make a HUGE difference in my welding, bright and clear and easy to place the bead exactly where I need it to be….It’s got a fast response to the arc, I get no blurry image through the lens when welding and being able to clearly see what I need to weld makes all the difference in the world when it comes to dripping sold straight and strong beads…It’s a small price to pay to protect your eyes and to drop straight solid beads
