They work exactly as they should. Each bookend has 4 foam pads on the base to protect your shelf and to help prevent the bookend from slipping. The weight of the books on top of the bookend is enough to keep the bookend from moving. I do wonder if rubber feet might have done the job as well while providing a bit more tackiness. Still, they get the job done.If you have large, heavy books that are substantially bigger than these bookends (which are 8" high), you may need a larger bookend.

I purchased these for a friend who has stacks'n'stacks of sheet music and music books - all of which are larger format than the average book heights on a shelf. He needed taller bookends to support the taller sheets/books. These are nicely made, heavy, and do well ... but given that they are a single piece of metal that is bent at the base ... without the 'cut out section' most have that protrude from the 'back side' of the bookend, there is a tendency for them to bend outward ... there isn't anything to give that added support. Othewise, they are nicely made, substantial ... and will 'do the job.'

These are very well worth the price and have weight which is great because they aren't flimsy. They are bigger in person and just what I needed for my use! Again, I recommend buying these!
