After using a big hammer and a block of wood, I finally decided to get the right tool for the job. This tool smoothly presses the damper onto the crank snout with no damage. Do it right!

If you only work on SBC & BBC engines this installer is a viable budget option given the sub $20 price. (Better to spend $20 on one of these than be a hack and install your balancer with a bolt.)I have a few different variations of these and this type with the bearing is the best based on my experience. The concept of these is to insert the tool in the crank snout, hold the main screw at the end with a wrench, and turn the large nut so that the torque/force required to press the balancer on is placed on the larger portion of the tool rather than to stress the smaller portion which is threaded into the crank snout. (Which is what happens when you attempt to press one on using just a bolt and washer.)The overall quality of this installer is pretty decent and so long as you use it properly and keep the threads and bearing assembly lubricated, it should last the average user for quite some time.
