I have a koi pond that is approximately 1,800 gallons. For the past few winters, I used a smaller, sinking trough heater that only kept a small circle of ice melted, which was apparently enough to keep my fish alive. On colder days, I would actually take a sledge hammer and break through the 4-5 inches of solid ice covering most of the pond and remove the large chunks of ice. I bought this larger, floating heater hoping that it would keep a larger circle of ice melted. The heater has surpassed my expectations. This morning it was 13 degrees Fahrenheit outside and the pond water temperature was 40 degrees.I put the heater in my pond on the 3rd of December when the water temperature was 34. I left it i for a few minutes and then lifted the heater slightly out of the water to check to see if it was heating. I saw steam coming off the coil and immediately placed it back in the water. Over the past month and a half, I checked the heater every 3-4 days to make sure it was working, and it has been. I placed the heater near the intake for the skimmer, thinking that the warmed water would be best if circulated to the waterfall and then into the larger part of the pond. Today at 13 degrees outside temperature, the waterfall flowed evenly and there was NO ice in the pond. I’m extremely pleased with this heater/de-icer.I cannot comment on the longevity of this heater since I have only used it for a month and a half. For the price, I won’t be unhappy if it lasts through the winter, and I’ll update this review when the product fails. I am sure I could extend its life if I only used it on days where the temperature is really low. The heater is designed to shut off when the water temperature gets around 40 degrees. I haven’t tried to check this function, but I can say that my water temperature hasn’t been more that a degree over 40 or cold days. Many reviews complain that the product doesn’t heat their ponds to higher temperatures. This product is clearly designed to heat the water to a temperature that will melt the ice. It is clearly not a whole pond heater to raise the temperature to spring or summer-like temperatures. If you want a total pond heater, prepared to spend a LOT of money on the equipment and the electric bill to run it.A lot of reviews complain about the lack of a cage around the heating element. I don’t know why they expected anything that was not in the picture of the product. The picture clearly shows an exposed element. Furthermore, if they looney over reviews, they would surely see previous complaints about the lack of a cage. If they have an exposed plastic liner, I don’t know why they would be surprised that an exposed heating element could melt a liner. Personally, I don’t need a cage around the element since my pond is line with rock. The element won’t melt rock. I am happy that I didn’t have to pay extra for an included cage when I don’t need it. People who were shocked that the cage wasn’t included must have not read the list of frequently purchased items at the bottom of this products page.Another complaint is about the short cord. Yes it is short but I can’t imagine that there is one perfect length for a cord. Attaching an extension cord is an easy fix.So far, I’m absolutely pleased with this heater/de-icer for convenience, performance, and price.

The product works great, however, I ordered the model that didn't come with the wire basket/guard that goes around it to prevent curious animals from burning their faces.

This is our first Winter with a pond. We bought a house this past summer that already has one (roughly 1,000 gallons). The previous owner told me that he ran the pump & waterfall 24/7/365, and that prevented the pond from ever freezing solid. Well, a few weeks ago, it got down to 10 degrees. The system did not freeze up, but it got really close. As a precaution, I purchased this heater.I know it's only designed to keep a hole opened in the middle, but I had a slightly different plan. I decided to place it right in front of the skimmer. My thinking was that if I can heat the water just as it gets drawn into the pump and down the waterfall, it might help keep everything flowing. Well it works better than I could have imagined! It's 10 degrees again this morning, and the pond is completely free of ice! I could not be happier with the Allied Precision 7521 Floating Heater. There are only two small drawbacks (hence the 4 stars). First, if you have a pond with a liner like I have, you're supposed to purchase the separate metal guard to keep the heating elements from touching the liner. This was not an issue for me, because I have it up against rocks with no chance of touching the liner, or anything else. The second drawback to this heater is that the power cord is much shorter than I thought it would be. I didn't measure it, but it can't be more than 6' in length. It was just barely enough to make it from the receptacle to the pond. If neither of those issues are a problem for you, I highly recommend this heater.

I am using this heater as a livestock tank heater and it works first class, no reservations about its use. The heater does its job and keeps the ice clear from the tank. The tank is not insulated either. To answer those individuals who thought the ad should have stated that a guard was required in some situations. The following is from the prespective of retired science/history teacher. The picture is worth a thousand words. In the picture, it appears that the element may be larger than the top. That would tell me that the element is probably going to hit the container before the floating top is. The bottom line is, this is a first class, economical heater that does the job and the user needs to use a little common sense. If the common sense isn't available, maybe the user should pay more and purchase a dummy proof heater where the seller is holding your hand. I would purchase this item again. Product died within 3 weeks of plugging it in. Weather was only in the upper 20's to low 30's. Asked Amazon for a replacement, it's on its way, but it's taking 12 days to get to me when the initial order took 2. Water fall is still running but it's now very cold 20ish and with out the deicer I'm afraid I've already lost alot of my fish. So far I rate this as garbage! If the second unit fails I will ask for a refund. A deicer around 30 dollars will probably cost me in the neighborhood of $300.00 plus in fish, some of which, I've been raising for 5 plus years. I hate to be negative and aggressive in a review but the other deicers last at LEAST 2 TO 3 seasons. I will again say GARBAGE! Plus why the long shipping time? AmaZon should know these are needed this time of the year! Not like I ordered a t-shirt that I can wait for!
