For some projects, I like silicone brushes and for more detailed projects, I like natural bristles. Initially, I liked these brushes to clean out a spice grinder and to grease a heavily designed pan, but when I found a bristle stuck to my pumpkin bread after being baked, I was unhappy that these brushes were not as well-made as I’d hoped. Having two sizes is convenient, but from now on, I will have to check the pan for any stray bristles.

Nice set, easy to clean...I use them to put egg wash on backed goods. Works well and they are easy to clean.

Okay as basting brush but not suitable for delicate pastry, too stiff, too thick. Two out of four brushes have remnants of the glue in the places that can be in contact with food, not sure if they are entirely safe. Handles have nice finish while bristle quality could use improvement. These brushes are too small for barbecue and too stiff for pastry, so their use is limited to small bird basting.

I got these brushes for two major uses -- spreading solid shortening on pans to grease them, and applying food grade mineral oil to my many wooden cutting boards and utensils. They work great for both. The bristles are sturdy with some flexibility. They're not super soft but I wouldn't call them stiff either. For me, that's perfect -- enough flexibility and agility to get into corners and cracks, enough stiffness to hold their shape for poking/stroking into those corners and cracks. I also used them to coat raw dinner roll dough (yeast bread) with melted butter and it worked fine as long as I used a light touch. I also tried coating the rolls with soft room temperature butter and again, with a light touch, the brushes worked fine for me. I don't know how they'd do with very delicate dough, but I'm not a good enough baker for that kind of recipe anyway. The bristles are firmly attached. I did get some light shedding on first use (no shedding when I washed them in hot soapy water first, just when using them) but that stopped after the first use and it was only one or two bristles per brush. The piece that secures the bristles to the handle is either plastic or plastic-coated metal, so no rusting problems expected. The handles are nice solid attractively-grained wood with a clear protective finish. I expect these brushes to continue to work beautifully for years.I did need a paint brush to apply some water-based wood stain, so I tried one of these. The results were not good, no fault of the product. The bristles held oil-based liquid/solid nicely, holding a decent amount without dripping. With the water-based stain, The bristles didn't hold much liquid and dripped quite a bit. I mention this for those who use water-based liquids for basting etc. The two wood stains were both, well, watery -- very thin, not a thick liquid -- which seemed to be what mattered. The wood stain that was slightly thicker dripped less.I'm delighted with these pastry brushes and expect to be happily using them in my kitchen for years.
