the chest is decent quality for an MDF piece of furniture... but it is NOT solid wood as advertised. for the price, this makes sense... but is not what i understood i was purchasing. direct quote from product listing (in case it changes in future) is "This solid wood chest is constructed to be durable and crafted to be simple and genteel."for those that don't know, MDF stands for medium density fiber board and is made up of wood chips pressed into board shape with a lot of chemicals as glue. there are mixed opinions on how safe the fumes that are slowly off gassed by MDF furniture are... but my concern is more how MDF does not hold up long term as well as real wood.also, the whole point of a cedar chest is the scent of cedar that acts as a bug repellent for woolens and linens. with a veneer of cedar that is less than 1mm thick on the MDF, there is a decent scent of cedar now, when it is new... but the oils in that wood will disappear in a relatively short time compared to a thicker layer of wood.on top of that, my chest did not come with the lock or hasp and the front bottom sashing was buckled/cracked and very dangerously splitery because of the nature of MDF. the box had not suffered any damage, and everything else was in good condition, so this damage obviously happened before packing. not during shipping. it would have taken a fair bit of force to crack it in that way. my guess is that the piece was dropped from a few feet.

This chest cost approximately $300. Three months later as I opened the lid of the chest the hardware ripped out and the right hinge was now loose. The lid will not close because the product is made of particle board and is now broken and cannot be repaired. I intend to file a complaint. This was a huge disappointment

I didn't know that this came unassembled. It was difficult to put together. I couldn't attach the lid, too heavy. Seems sturdy. The illustrations weren't clear. Not sure which piece went where and in what position.

We ordered 2 for our granddaughters but the there was damage but will try to hide it. Don’t have time to return them.
