Summary: Adding a few grab bars to dad's shower. I used a lot ofproducts for this project, so including all related products in thisreview.Recommendation:1) When mounting grab bars, it's always easier if you can find thestud to attach to. In this vertical install, I decided to use a studand Wing-Its anchors; partially because I wasn't sure I could hitboth, and didn't want to put two fasteners vertically (on either theright or left only), but that would also position the bar in theshower a little too far in (towards the shower control).2) The WingIts requires a 3/4" hole through the mounting material. For tile, this can be especially challenging. I used the SHDIATOOLdiamond 3/4" bit, with the DRILLAX adapter to get through the tile, and then used the 3/4" BOSCH bit to finish through the dry wall. Alsoused the BOSCH bits for the other small hole. Having the right toolfor the job is the difference between project completion, and a messy, disaster.Related Products:Calculated Industries 7310 StudMark Magnetic Stud Finder with 2 Removable Magnet Markers ~ $12Pros: strong magnet; multiple marking options.Cons: None. Conclusion: 5-stars R8924P Home Care 24-Inch Concealed Screw Bath Safety BathroomGrab Bar, Peened ~ $30Pros: Moen name, includes stainless screws.Cons: None. Conclusion: 5-stars Grab Bar WingIts, PK2 ~ $14Pros: Heavy duty, highly rated.Cons: Cost ($7/anchor).Conclusion: 4-stars (cost) Diamond Core Drill Bits 3/4 Inch ~ $13Pros: Right tool for the job, looked brand new after drilling twoholes (with proper technique, including cool water).Cons: None. Conclusion: 5-stars Core Drill Bit Arbor Adapter ~ $15Pros: Allows SHDIATOOL bit to be used with drill (instead of angle grinder).Cons: Cost (a little expensive). Conclusion: 4-stars (cost) GT3000 Carbide Hammer Drill Bit Set ~ $25Pros: Cuts great; carrying case.Cons: None. Conclusion: 5-stars

Magnets on the back pull to the drywall screws, the two little arrow things are also magnetic and stick to those screws. Doesn't work the best on drywall covering lath+plaster, but what really does? Anyhow, this tool is awesome. You can find multiple studs with it, marking up to three at a time. Makes hanging something a pinch. Just helps you find drywall screws, doesn't help you with electrical at all. 100% worth the price.

I thought it was interesting that a calculator maker would fab a stud locator, very practical does work excellent and helps you locate studs quickly

I am really frustrated by stud finders. Maybe it's just me but they seem to be awkward to hold and overly complicated. When I saw this magnet I thought I'd give it a shot. It works and it will stick to the wall. I haven't finished the job yet because I have to buy a longer dowel.

I know...you are here because you have 1900's plaster walls and are afraid to put a million holes in your wall only to find lathe behind the plaster and you thought it was a stud. First of all, 1920's studs (or studs over 100 years old) are actually, like literally, 2" or more. Today 2x4's are actually less than 2". So, with that said, you have 100+ year old timber (THAT DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE in our forests) that you want to be careful with, know where each stud is, and don't want to put so many holes in plaster because you and I both know it'll be cracking before you can say, oops, that's just lathe. Are you getting what I'm putting down? No? probably shouldn't bother to continue to read. Yes? Okay, so, in your 100+ year old home; do you have an attic? If so, climb up there with a bright flashlight and LOOK down through any exposed points so you can actually see that 100+ year old timber that are your wall studs. Pretty amazing. You can, in some cases, shine the light down through the wall to see where they are, correctly measure the width (16 on center is usual), and get an idea of placement from corners. THEN, get a Deep wall scan stud finder. Yea, sorry, these magnets are GREAT. The problem is they also throw false positives on some of the odd non-stud nails. A deep wall scanner WILL find studs behind plaster. These magnets are good for aligning a stud vs FINDING it. Enough said. Don't put too many holes in your plaster!

I combined this with an electronic stud finder and measured distance from the three marked points. I highly recommend this product.

Small green magnets are too weak. They fall off wall easily. Total waste of time. It’s a good idea, but they used cheap magnets that makes product unusable.

Works far easier and frankly better than any of the battery powered stud finders I've used in the past. And price was good too!

This only finds nails in the studs and since the wall is glued to the studs this doesn't do a very good job. It's a good magnet don't get me wrong, but for the purpose of what I wanted it for, it didn't work and had to resort to an actual stud finder device.
