Valuable Polishing Techniques

Use of polisher RPM

Set the polisher's RPM

Too high RPM will create excessive heat that will result in white resin pads smearing on the stone. In other cases, it will even burn the stone itself. As a rule, for 50-100-200 grit pads use 2000-2500 RPM and starting with grit 400 use 3000-3500 RPM. If you want to compensate for the loss of RPM, you can always add an extra pass. Never use above 5000 RPM.

Use of Water

Amount of water

Low grit pads, 50-100-200, can be used for dry polishing or with small amount of water. If you don’t feel the lower grit pad biting the material, chances are you are using too much water and probably too high RPM. Starting with grit 400 and higher, it is recommended to use more water. Using a suitable amount of water makes the pads work faster and increases their life.

Pad top and bottom

Use the whole pad

Users who use minimum amount of water will notice the pads flexing and cupping outward around the middle. This way, only the edges of the pad will touch the stone leaving dull spots in the middle. Applying more pressure can fix this issue, but due to the flexible nature of the pad and the thickness of hook and loop used to secure it on the backer, these blurry spots might remain. To overcome this issue, use the pad’s edges as you alternate from the top ½ to the bottom ½ while you slide across the stone edge. You should feel the pad’s contact that will allow you to release some of the pressure.

Engineered Stone Polishing with Confidence: 8 Tips

  1. Grind wet. Wet grinding eliminates the damage to stone-polishing pads.
  2. Judge dry. If the surface is wet, scratches can pass unnoticed.
  3. Use the whole wheel. Stop using only the middle of the pad.
  4. Skip no grit. It’s always faster to do it right the first time than to try to take shortcuts and risk damaging the stone you’re working on.
  5. Polish slow. Keep the speed of the pad low for the lower grits #50 #100 #200 (~2000-2500 RPM) and go to higher speeds for higher grits #400 #800 #1500 #3000 (~3000-3500 RPM). Never use the pads at higher speeds than 5000 RPM.
  6. Keep it clean. A good way to ensure every single part of edge is polished is to wipe the edge surface with gently squeezed wet cleaning towel and then polish dry.
  7. Believe what you see. If your eyes tell you that something is not quite right about the surface, stop! Figure out what the problem is before continuing.
  8. Be patient. Polish a little and look a lot. This is the mantra for successful results in the polishing process.

Follow the rules and you will be rewarded

Skip no grit starting from the lower one to the higher one, use the right amount of water, set the correct RPM for the lower grits and the higher grits, be patient as polishing is not a task to be done in a hurry. In the end your project will shine.

I had a family heirloom that I inherited recently. It was an antique dresser with a marble top. The top was in bad shape with lots of scratches, some quite deep. I was able to get all but the deepest of the scratches out and put a nice shine on the marble top. Just what I needed for this project. The pads appear to have lots of life left on them, though I don't have a current use for them. Maybe I'll pick up something else that needs polishing...

For the first time I purchased a product over Amazon with the word "diamond" in it that actually did what it was heralded to do. These "polishing" pads (50-200 grit) are great for removing cutting marks and smoothing surfaces in stone sculpture; much like using a sander on woodcarvings--and almost as quick. This is what I hoped they would do and all I wanted. (I'm working in limestone and other porous rock.} However, I had some trouble with the more refined grits when I tried to get a polish on the surface of the rock and bring the color out. Even when wetting I noticed the stone surface began to blacken. I need more practice, obviously. As an alternative, I polish up to the 200 grit and then apply finishing wax (for wood) to the stone surface; this not only brings out the color, but also creates a dull sheen that is very attractive. (Sorry, too lazy to get up and take a photograph.)

wast of money will not cut marble I can do better with hand padsUp graded the review to 4 starsFirst, this company send me email and explained the issue with thread size, needed to have 14mm to fir the grinding machine. OK, thanks for the info and I thought that was the end since I returned the product. Then few days later I receive duplicate of my order with correct size thread on the adapter plate. Now that I did not expect, this is a first company that has gone this far to correct a problem, for that I give you 10 stares if I could. As for the power of the marble cutting disks they are still dull and do not seem to grind the marble. I do have enough of water so I'm not cutting dry, I don't know I might be not using the disks correctly. Also RPM on grinding machine are at the lowest position about 100-150 RPMI just don't know what I'm doing wrong or the disks are not abrasive enough, but this is not working for me.

Bought this to polish a corian sink and counter top. Pads come apart (throw the tiles) when bending even slightly to polish an inside radius, ruining the pad and creating a safety hazard.

I've never worked with stone before and jumped in to cut a counter for my outdoor kitchen. Couldn't believe how easy these were to use and had outstanding results on the first edge I polished. Project is complete and looks outstanding. Had an issue with brown residue on the higher grit pads which could have been my fault, they immediately replaced and advised me to use a lower RPM and water at high grits for the best results. Perfect advice!I highly recommend these, don't be careless and you can convert any rough slab into a finished project. My friends were all amazed and I am now "The Man" after they watched the conversion.

First time trying to sand concrete, the mounting plate separated and flew off the angle grinder. A two piece design glued together isn't a very good design. Total waste of money!

These are pretty good quality and last a lot longer than the other two sets I've tried. Worked well for wet polishing concrete countertops with an orbital sander. Bought two sets thinking I'd burn through them just like i did the first two, but the first set is still ready for more. Would definitely recommend.

The thread size is not the standard M14, it is larger, so only works with large concrete grinders, not standard angle grinders that can take a 125mm pad. This is not specified on the ad. The pads are okay, but not as effective as others I have used. Even using the 50grit took a long time to get surfaces somewhat smooth.

The thread size for the backing pad wasn't the standard M14 size which wasn't specified at all, so this product can't be universally used on a grinder. The sanding pads were entirely ineffective despite using multiple techniques, grinders, and sanders to attempt to get them to work
