Electric motor was weak on my son's 4Runner. Tried cleaning and re-greasing the old unit and it worked for a bit. It could engage the front axle, but not disengage. Gave this a shot and it fixed the problem. If you are patient, there is a trick to replacing this with no more than putting it on ramps, dropping the skid plates and draining the oil from the differential. Also want to make sure you have the shift forks lined up with the lock ring. My son did it first and it went up too easy. We had to pull it off again to get it right. Still have some other issues in the transfer case to sort out for the 4wd to work perfectly. Miss the old get out and lock in type hubs and all manual type engagement. New stuff is fine when it works, but a real pain to trouble shoot when it breaks.

Dealer wanted $700 to replace this part...bought this on Amazon and did it myself for a fraction of the cost. 4 wheel drive works again! Perfect fit for my 2001 4runner SR5.

Defective . I've used Dorman parts for years and is a reputable automotive parts company. This is obviously something that did NOT make it through quality control. There's a reason is was so much cheaper. It's crap and unusable. The electrical half of it WAS what I needed so I put the 2 together. Huge waste of time and money. DON'T BUY ! JUNK

part worked well , it's best to do this job on lift , I did it on ground , not easy on ground , you will need rtv sealant for this project also

Bad part won't warranty it. Only worked a few times. Save your money the local parts store will honor the lifetime warranty when you purchase parts from them. Cost me over 750.00 because of lack of integrity and lacking customer service. You will be money ahead in the long-term. You cannot save enough buying here to offset your losses and down time.

It fixed the problem and seems to be working OK at 30% of the OEM cost. The OEM version lasted 18 years so only time will tell.
