I usually scramble around for something to use as a cake tester - a toothpick is usually the first thing I find but they're too short and I don't think wood is the right material,,, or plastic for that matter. I sometimes use a bamboo skewer (it's still wood but at least it's longer). I used to have a couple of those pins you use to seal up a turkey before putting it in the oven but they disappeared years ago.Now I have the perfect cake/bananabread/muffin tester. Perfect length (4 1/2 inches), thin steel shaft, nice plastic handle on the top. And it comes in a nice clear plastic sheath to keep it clean between uses - and also big enough to make it easier to find in the drawer.

I’ve been using a toothpick to help me determine when cakes, pies, cupcakes, etc. are done and this little pick works so much better! It’s reusable, thin (so it doesn’t leave a bigger hole like toothpicks do), it’s long for thicker cakes, and comes with a small sturdy storage container. You could also use it for royal icing when flooding cookies. I have no complaints!
