From the Manufacturer

It's not those big icicles that do the real damage, it's the ice you don't see that backs up in gutters and under shingles. When the ice melts it can really do a number on repair costs. Easy Heat ADKS-300 60-Foot Roof Snow De-Icing Kit prevents water and ice damage by providing a clear path for melting water to flow off the roof. The versatile design adapts to most roof and gutter configurations. This product is intended for the sole use of preventing ice dams from forming on inclined roofs with tab shingles, in gutters and downspouts. This roof de-icing cable is not intended for use as a snow melting system to clear roof of ice and snow. This system can be installed with confidence that it will operate for years without requiring service. All components are made of the highest quality material and are tested during critical points in the manufacturing process.

Bought this product October 22, 2015, and installed it on my roof a few days after receiving it. Installation of the cable was much easier than I had anticipated: I had it completed in about 20 minutes! We just got our first snowfall 2 days ago (about 6 inches on December 19) and I was able to test the cable to see how it works. It is doing a great job of keeping the snow melted away from the edge of the roof and should keep me from having an ice dam! I am very pleased with how easy it was to install and with how good of a job it is doing with melting the snow. Champion Values did a great job of shipping this to me quickly and packaging it well. I would highly recommend this to anyone!

For our garage's north roof prone to ice dams, I installed two of the 100ft length boxes per the recommended spacings using two different electrical circuits so that each was on a separate circuit and switches. Installed each one with its own sensor and configured additional small cords that allow non-sensor use with standard timers plugged into the outlets feeding each circuit. Why? Because sometimes I wanted to override the sensors to keep the heaters on all night to speed up melting when the sensors would normally not activate when temp and moisture criteria were not present. A neat trick I did was to also add during the system installation last summer, some security additions to the roof heater cords at the apex of each triangle and along the eaves where the clips were attached for the heater wires (this is where the heater wires change direction ie. the bottom apex of the heater cords triangles) . The security additions amounted to adding some small neoprene metal washers sandwiched into the provided clips. I pre-drilled small holes into the provided roof clips to allow a small neoprene hex head bolt to pass through the clip (ie the folded over part above the hook holding the heater cord) and the sandwiched neoprene washers and be driven into the 5/8" plywood decking without penetrating completely. All this was carefully designed and tested first off roof to make sure of the result. None penetrated and are holding magnificently despite some heavy wet snows. I didn't want any clips getting moved down by the freeze/thaw cycles and melting ice and snow. As far as I'm concerned, this product and system is fine. Other systems are many times more expensive but I wonder how much more beneficial for their high cost.

I have the cables installed. I actually did not use the clips that came with the kit as I didn't want to clip anything to the shingles. I bought a different clip that I was able to adhere between the shingles with roofing cement. No real force here, took some time to cure because of cool temperatures. Cable was very easy to install, I thought getting it in the down spout would be challenging, but piece of cake. I really like the cable spacer clips, they slip right on and squeeze tight with your fingers, made a loop and secured with spacers and down it went right around the bend. On the side of the house I had extra so triple run in the gutter which gave nice coverage. The back side has a double run, so I can compare the results. Visually the triple gutter run is impressive. I also have installed mechanical timers instead of the automatic timers, just going to run a few hours a day on the north side of the house. Doing the math, where I live, in total I have 160 feet of cable installed which works out to be a cost of about 10 cents per hour. See how this system works, but unreal, no test snow yet.

Installation on my second story gutter took longer than I expected. It would seem the best way to position this product is to have it doubled up and clipped in the gutter and downspout. Getting the doubled up and clipped wires to feed through the downspout was a challenge, but still only took 2 hours.Once it was up though, it has worked very well. I plug it in when the sleet/snow begins. It slowly/steadily drains water through the downspout. I unplug it once there is no more drainage. We have had two storms since installation and it has channeled all water to the downspout, preventing any buildup of snow/ice on the gutters and therefore no melt/drip over the side of the gutter, which was my objective.

While this product had the best reviews for the size and strength of the cable and the hooks, the product did arrive with VERY weak hooks, most of which were ripped off in the very first snow fall. Now, much of the cable is dangling off the roof, with the rest stuck under the snow/ice on the roof. I am heating the air with the dangling cable, and attempting to make a little dent in the snow on the roof with the cable still stuck under the snow. Oh well.... next year.

Use this on our metal roofed garage every year, and it works great. (I just wish these could be adjusted to specific lengths.) Last year we had quite a bit of freezing rain, and over 7 feet of total snow fall with 18"-24" falling at once and these worked pretty well. These cables were used to prevent snow from sliding down onto a power pole attached to our garage, and the cables kept the area clear (except after a heavy dumping of snow). These also prevented the freezing rain from building up. Buying more this year to put on our house.

Got this wire in order to get rid of a huge ice dam along the edge of my house caused by water from a south-facing roof line dripping on to a north-facing roof line. When it started, the ice was over 4" thick in some spots. The wire takes a little while to get going (I'd say about 12 hours) but once it gets going, it really does a number on the ice. Quite impressed. They are much easier to install if you install them before you have ice. Obviously. I had to chisel (literally) spots on the upper part of the ice dam in order to get the clips in to string the wire.
