The instrument I rec'd arrived was pretty, but it arrive with all four strings so slack that the tailpiece had come off. I thought that a bit odd but, when I tried to tighten the strings, I found out why they'd been so slack: the A string couldn't be tightened because it was already broken: snapped off, right at the peg. I found out why it had broken when I tried to replace it: the A-string peg was practically touching the top of the "peg box," so close that the hole through the A-string peg was completely blocked: no string could ever go through to the other side. Whoever strung up this violin must have forced the broken string through the peg somehow, broke it in the attempt, and so knew it was broken and could not be tightened—or replaced, either. I felt that this person had slackened all of the strings in order to hide the defective craftsmanship. After Amazon told me that returning the instrument had been approved, the seller contacted me for more details about the defect, then offered me $50 to try to get the defect corrected. I rejected the offer—the quality of an instrument should not be the buyer's responsibility, plus a failed attempt to modify the instrument would surely have made it nonreturnable. I returned the instrument, as authorized, and did receive a full refund. I feel obliged, however, also to mention that this instrument does not come with either a shoulder rest, or a tuner, both of which items are shown in the photo (but, to the seller's credit, aren't actually mentioned in the product description.)
