Bought to replace expired “first alert†smoke detectors. Very trustworthy company.

The first one I received would not activate. But they sent another one right out which worked great. After paying close attention to how the second one was activated I took the first one apart and was able to activate it. The pull tab did not do what it was supposed to. So I carefully manipulated it with a flat head screw driver.

fully onto the mount bracket to activate the unit battery. The unit did not come in a retailed yellow and black box with a picture and description of the unit but in a plain corrugated box. When I took it out of the box, I removed the small yellow pull tab where the locked battery compartment suppose to be. Then I pressed the test button but nothing happened just like other reviews said. I thought I got a bad unit also. Then I put the unit onto the mount bracket and twist it all the way onto the mount bracket (till it lock in) but not screwed to the wall/ceiling yet just free hand. When I did that, I think I heard a click. I then pressed the test button and this time the unit worked and it did the test beeps. I think you need to twist the unit onto the mount bracket which then clicks the battery into place and gets turned on. This way the battery does not get drained while it is on the shelf unit you twist the battery into place. Usually, there is a large pull tab you pull off then the battery contacts touches the unit but not with this unit. You need to remove the small yellow pull tab and then put the unit onto the mount bracket and fully twist it into place which then sets the battery. No where in the instruction does it tells you to twist it onto the mount bracket to set the battery. That’s why so many reviewers say their unit is defective as most people just try pressing the test button after they remove the small yellow pull tab. Other than that, hopefully it works as it suppose to and save lives. I Removed two stars for no instructions on how to activate the battery leaving consumers muffed when it does not beep when testing
