Decent beginners kit. This kit comes with the basics, reel has line on it, includes a pack of leader, a tying tool/nipper and a retractor, as well as flies and a small fly case. These are pretty basic but they will get you started. This is a 3/4wt rod which means it's for smaller fish - think brook trout, small bass, fish in the 14 inch and less range. This is good for hiking - the rod is 7ft long which is on the shorter side for fly rods but is useful to get into tight spaces.Fly rods are delicate, and a 3/4wt rod is even more prone to breaking. If this is for a child, consider a heavier wt rod (like a 7 wt), and especially if they are a beginner and new to fishing. The positives of a low wt rod is the sensitivity to feel a strike, but it's not meant for rough and tumble use.The rod's reel attachment area - this worked fine, though the pieces don't feel like aluminum, even so they hold well and no issues with splitting/cracking the reel retention.My only complaint is the strap on the carrying case is way too small. Even at it's most open I can barely get it on. my shoulder.
