This bulletin describes common blower motor resistor failures including in-spection and test-ing to ensure proper operation

7

The STETIG technical services team receives many calls about inoperative blower motors and blower motors that only work on certain speeds. When a blower motor only works on the high-est speed most likely the blower motor resistor has failed. A failed resistor will sometimes allow the blower motor to run on the high-est speed position because the max speed is not resisted and will have a separate circuit through the resistor. Before replacing the resistor check the circuit fuse and wiring for possible damage. The failure of individual fan speeds may also indicate a failed blower resistor. Be sure to check the wiring and connector for damage first.

9

A DVOM (digital volt ohm meter) is necessary to te-st the blower motor circuits. Using a wiring diagram for the vehicle application and the te-st meter, te-st each circuit while cycling the fan switch at each of the fan speeds. You should see a change in the activated circuit as you cycle the fan switch. Fan resistors with integrated circuitry and vehicles with automatic climate control will require a more in depth understanding of circuit operation to te-st.

2

It is possible in some cases the resistor connector can melt causing the failure, or you may have a situation where the resistor has been replaced recently and failed again. For this situation, the blower motor amperage draw should be te-sted to verify it has not exceeded the rated amperage specification causing excessive heat leading to melting and failure. For this te-st you will need to locate the fuse for the blower motor circuit. The vehicle owner’s manual is a good place to find the location and correct rated amperage fuse required. Using a voltmeter and an amperage clamp, install the clamp around the harness leading to the blower motor, this will give you an accurate amperage reading of the blower motor.

1

With the blower fan running on high speed the percentage should be less than half of the fuse rating. Allow the fan to run for an extended time for this te-st to allow the motor to reach full operating temperature. If the draw is over half the fuse AMP rating, the blower motor is the likely cause of the resistor failure. Replacement of all failed, damaged, and worn components are required to ensure the blower motor runs properly and to prevent future component failures or damage to the blower motor circuits.

Many trouble codes and electrical problems may lead to the replacement of an electrical connector. This article will guide you through the proper replacement procedure of those electrical connectors.

STETIG offers many aftermarket replacement electrical connectors. We receive numerous questions concerning proper wire orientation. On many of our aftermarket replacement electrical connectors the wire color will may not match the wire color of the connector it is taking the place of. The color of the wire and connector is irrelevant, but the gauge thickness is critical. A smaller gauge wire will not be able to handle the load that a larger gauge wire can and may lead to an overheat condition and possible fire. When installing a new connector, it must be wired in the same manner as the OE connector. To correctly install the new product, cut one wire at a time matching the new connector cavity to the old to ensure the proper circuits are being connected.

In cases that the old connector is damaged to the point that you cannot tell what cavity a certain terminal was originally installed, a factory service manual with connector views or schematics will need to be obtained.

For example, in the picture above the orange wire could be identified as the numbe-r one cavity and should match the location on the new electrical connector. To install the new connector, it is important to cut one wire at a time in a staggered length pattern. The staggered length pattern will allow the wire harness to lay flat and not have a mass of repairs in one area which will allow a cleaner looking repair and prevent possible interference with items around it.

Solder and shrink tube are the best repair choice, but a crimp style butt connector is an acceptable alternative when used with shrink tubing to protect the connection.Don't using wire nuts, blade or scotch locks for permanent clean connections. Attaching the new connector to the old harness should be done by stripping the insulation away on both wires you will be connecting, this will allow you to use a solder iron and solder to permanently bond the two wires while making a lasting, low resistance connection. Shrink tubing over the newly bonded wires is required to prevent a short circuit and to prevent corrosion. Remember to install the shrink tube before the wires are soldered together.

First one lasted only one year. I’ve bought 2 more and each lasted about 4 months. Stay away from this product. For a little more money you can get the original version that lasted13 years! This product is 100% junk and NOT OEM as claimed. Get the Motorcraft Brand. I want my money refunded for all 3 that I bought!

Poor quality, failed to work after about six months, be sure to buy the better branded replacement part! Should have a 12-month warranty and be replaced if it fails by that time.
