It just arrived today but I can say that I am greatly impressed. This is no cheap plastic tool handle. The wood appears to be of traditional hickory, although maybe China has a substitute. In any case it is sturdy and straight-grained (important for it not to break). And the end tool being stainless is a big plus.Understand that I just got this today, but from my past experience, despite being a bit more expensive, is a wise choice.

The tool is beautiful, weighs just enough to feel sturdy but not too heavy. I have a short-handled version of this tool and adore it. I can weed the garden in record time and truth be told, this was the first season I kept it under control, but with the short handled one (also an Amazon purchase/gift), you either have to crouch or crawl to use it if you don't have a raised bed situation so I thought the long-handled one would be perfection. It isn't! The blade is sharp on the opposite side from you and you can't simply pull it towards you and cut through the weeds as you do with the short handled one. I am getting the hang of working with it, but there is also another issue that another reviewer talked about- the handle length messes with its balance and I find myself "choking up" on it and holding the handle halfway down to get the power I need.

My wife used this to clean up the garden of weeds before she put her bok choy in for fall/winter and it was very sharp. She was very impressed with it and it is very durable. Handle is solid wood and polished so no splinters or anything and the sickle part is very well polished and seems like it will hold up against rust and such. Easy to clean as well.

This tool is so great, the handle is nice and long so it's less hard on your back and it easily pulls the weeds up and removes them from the garden with no issues. The blade is sharp which helps make it easy to remove the weeds. The handle is also super sturdy which also makes it easy.

As title states the tool is well built, seems balanced and easy to use. I have not yet got to put it through its paces as its been the colder months here. Will update review if anything changes.

Not sharp enough

This Japanese sickle hoe is awesome. It has a really long and solid handle, making it easy to get in tight spaces in our garden. And the sickle hoe is extra sharp (and impressive) to really get weeds whacked and hopefully eradicated from our flower/vegetable beds (we have this invasive weed that takes over with really long and woody roots).
