Our Marine Ammonia Checker HC (HI784) is designed to accurately and quickly determine the ammonia level in marine (saltwater) samples. The digital readout makes measurements effortless. Range: 0.00 to 2.50 ppm (mg/L) NH3 Built-in timer so you don't miss a step Saltwater Compatible Our Ammonia Checker HC (HI784) provides an uncomplicated, highly accurate, and budget-friendly way to measure ammonia (NH3/NH4+) in saltwater/marine environments. Ammonia is naturally found as part of the nitrogen cycle of a tank as aquarium organisms produce it as waste. In a balanced tank, the majority of ammonia is consumed by bacteria and the nitrogen cycle continues. When out of balance, ammonia toxicity can wreak havoc on tank inhabitants. It is important to monitor ammonia levels to ensure they remain steady and low. The ammonia checker is designed as an exceptionally accurate alternative to chemical test kits, our Marine Ammonia Checker (HI784) provides quick, accurate results in a few easy steps. Ammonia Checker Tips & Tricks for Accurate Measurements Ensure the sample does not contain any debris. Hold dropper bottles completely vertically and squeeze slowly to ensure correct drop size. Whenever the cuvette is placed into the checker, it must be dry outside and free of fingerprints, oil and dirt. Wipe the cuvette thoroughly with HI731318 microfiber cleaning cloth or a lint-free cloth prior to insertion. Shaking the cuvette can generate bubbles, causing higher readings. To obtain accurate measurements, remove such bubbles by swirling or by gently tapping the cuvette. Do not let the reacted sample stand too long after reagent has been added, as accuracy will be affected. Discard the sample immediately after the reading has been taken or the glass might become permanently stained. Prepare sample cuvette immediately after collecting sample from tank. Ammonia is volatile and will dissipate if stored in a bottle before analysis, causing low measurements.

PROs.If you have trouble reading those color charts this is a good option. Easy to use.CONSHanna reagent refill packs are IMHO ridiculously expensive for a few grains of powder.

Wish I could give this zero stars. Hanna decided to make this device with 1 single button and auto shut off which was criminally stupid. First you add regent A, regent B, then water, and then you put the cuvette into the device to zero it out. That part works fine. Then you add regent C to the cuvette and put it back in the device & press & hold the button to start the 15 minute count down. The problem is holding the button also shuts off the device or resets it. So 9 times out of 10 the 15 minute countdown never starts & you’ve now reset the device back to step 1. Problem is you can’t zero it out now because you already added regent C. So now you have to start all over and waste more regent. Alternatively you can just wait 15 minutes & press the button instead of doing the countdown on the device. Problem is it has a 20 minute auto shut off so if you’re not fast enough with adding Regent C, you risk the device turning off before you ever get to press the button. WHY NOT JUST ADD A 2ND BUTTON? Or get rid of the auto shut off. Having a button be multi-function on a device that requires extreme precision & uses expensive regents is just dumb. The kit comes with enough regents for 10 tests but I’ve easily wasted more than half of those due to the device resetting itself or shutting off. I’m so annoyed I bothered with this. Should have just stuck with the color tests.

Really appreciate getting digital readings when trying to cycle an aquarium. Only part I don't like is that it only goes to 2.5 ppm, but this is still very useful used in conjunction with another cheaper and less accurate tester that goes beyond 2.5 ppm. I'd buy it again. I can't find anything better.
