A couple of years ago I scored a 1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ from the original owner that mostly used it to tow behind the RV. It was pretty well taken care of and not overly-modded. Since then I have had to update things like the transmission, LED lights etc. All part of owning an older car. I was shooting some slow-motion out on a fire road on the undercarriage and was somewhat shocked to see my muffler and the rock guard for the gas tank rotting with rust. So, I got the muffler swapped out and asked the guy if he would swap out the rock guard. Nope, they do not do that but he thought, as I did, it is just about 5-9 bolts and easy peazy. The bolts were NO PROBLEM. What I did not know was how these metal straps are integrated with the gas tank. I got all the bolts off and I was like hmmmmmm....why can't this rock guard drop?Long story short now I know...#1 problem my gas tank was full = HEAVY. #2 I do not have a jack or any stands and I am solo so basically it would be very difficult for someone like me to do this solo. Since one side of the tank had dropped to the ground where I had removed the strap, I needed to get some ratchet straps and get the tank off the ground and then had it towed to the local garage. They ended up charging me two hour labor and the real reason for this review is the rock guard fits perfectly and probably is 1000 times better quality than the original OEM. So, highly recommended and the price was great. BUT, if you are mostly a desk jockey like me, I would buy this and then find a local garage that can put it up on a lift, temporary disconnect the gas tank/fuel line, drop both the guard and the tank and then swap it out. With my new muffler and rock guard I am ready to get back on the trail!

This isn't just a skid plate. It is a SKID PLATE! I was very surprised when I picked up the box upon delivery; much heavier that expected. It's basically 1/8" steel. WAY more protection than the factory stamped sheet steel. This does not come with straps; you'll need to re-use the ones off your tank. If you're upgrading to the 20 gallon tank, you'll need to order another strap. It fits well, looks good, and I think will do an excellent job. If you've done a V8 swap with dual exhaust, the is zero room beside the tank on the driver's side. You'll have to re-route that pipe. I would normally consider that a drawback, but in this case, I'd say it was a fair trade.

I was impressed with the build quality and finish of this plate. It also looks just like the stock one. Only problem is that all the mounting holes are in the wrong places. The holes for the tank straps are also in the wrong places. If I did manage to get this to bolt up the tank would be rubbing directly on the leaf springs. You can see how that may not turn out well over time. I could drill these out, but think I'll just send it back and order a different one. If this unit lined up properly it would receive 5 stars.

Worked perfectly. It’s a pita to get back up but it lined up very well. Make no mistake - I still had to manhandle it to align perfectly. Lastly, I replaced the rubber mat from another vendor. That is not included with this product
