It is now a part of the National Park System. Our fireback reproduces an original Hopewell trademark design. Today you can add that touch of elegance and history to your own fireplace with this fascinating piece of Americana. This firebacks is intended to rest right on the floor, at the back of the hearth. All our firebacks are designed for use with both gas logs and wood burning fireplaces.

Nice product. Looks as pictured. Its heavy so if you are older you might need a hand getting it inside and setting up in your fireplace.

This fireback looks great in the fireplace because it’s so large that it perfectly covers the back bricks of the fireplace, not to mention it protects them as well. It’s heavy and feels durable. It does seem to give some extra heat output, which is nice but I wouldn’t buy it just for that reason. Overall a worthy buy.

I live only about 3 miles from Hopewell Furnace, PA (now a National Park) founded by Mark Bird in 1772 who was the Commander of the Pennsylvania Militia under General George Washington during the Revolutionary War, so you can just imagine how proud I am to have this fire back in one of the fireplaces of my 300 year old home.BTW - it was due to Colonel Bird's offer to General Washington that he send a messenger to his iron plantation with orders to load up a couple of barges with food and supplies at Hopewell Furnace (an iron plantation) and send them down the Skuylkill River to Valley Forge that saved the Continental Army from starvation that brutal winter of 1777!I must say I was quite surprised at the weight of this piece (about 70 lbs) and a bit concerned that some had actually complained that their's had cracked during use. I also purchased the Feet (CFB-F) to mount it on at the back of my fireplace. The fireplace which I am using this fire back in is a modified Rumfeld style meaning that the design is rather shallow (about 2 " deep) and tall (about 5") and about 4" wide. This design requires less fuel (wood) for the amount of output (heat) it produces. The fire back enhances an already satisfactory result in output while protecting the stucco at the back of the hearth. And, yes, it's a stunning piece of early Americana.I suspect the individual complaining that it cracked while using it made one or both of two mistakes when using the fire back:1) Didn't raise the fire back up from the sole of the hearth utilizing a set of feet to raise and aid in tempering the heat and draft causing a drastic differential in temperature which would have easily created a crack with the stress due to the uneven expansion.2) Got a little too nuts with the fire where the intense heat created the crack.

This fireback is beautiful. But it cracked the first time we built a fire. They are going to send me another one but I have to send this one back and it weighs nearly fifty pounds. Will have to make a box for it. Sending this back is no fun. LOL. Now let’s see if the new one lasts more than one fire. I was hoping for many years of use, an heirloom.

It is good-looking and seems to be effective in reflecting the heat into the room, and it is protecting the bricks from the fire.

These are not, as the seller says in one of the answered questions, and the manufacturer who I called, three quarters of an inch thick! That it totally untrue. Why make it up? The border is three quarters of an inch thick, the raised patterns are less than half an inch and the main body is one quarter max. Maybe. Ours has increased the heat output from the fire dramatically, but does not hold heat for long once the fire burns down. Being so thin we are anticipating it not lasting long. The manufacturer whom I called directly and the amazon vendor should not make things up. Buyer beware.
