Your cart is empty.A perfect pie requires a perfect pie crust. At Jefferson Street Ceramics we are potters by day, and die hard bakers by night! We had the idea to use our american clays (the same clay we use to make our ceramic bakeware) to make pie weights for baking perfect blind pie crusts. A blind crust is simply pre-baking your crust for a little while before you add all the good filling. But without something to weight the crust down it can slump , bubble and shrink. To use our baking beads simply place a piece of parchment paper in your unbaked pie crust and fill with our all natural clay beads, then place in the oven. Once your crust has browned, remove the weights and allow to cool. Our weights are vitrified ceramic (fired to 220 degrees f) which means they won't soak up water and oil and become smelly or rancid over time. Because of this they are super easy to store and clean. When finished baking, simply wash the beads with warm soapy water and lay on a cloth to dry. When dry place back in the breathable cotton mesh bag and store until you get the hankering to bake again. (Which we hope is often!) Our pie weights are made from 100% natural American clays and fired to 2000 degrees F, assuring that they are completely food safe. Since pie baking rarely is about scrimping, we have provided a full 2.4 lb of beads in each bag, ample beads for baking 1- 9" pie or two 7". You may be of the mindset that pie weights are pie weights. What’s the big deal? Well, while you may be able to use any kind of weight to serve your crust-managing purposes, I’ve found these weights far more special.Perhaps it’s my visual nature and affinity for all things stoneware and unusual but these weights are just gorgeous. I love their rustic, old-fashioned look and feel and their varied coloring in shades of khaki, tan, gray and faint olive. As a food photographer, I'm drawn to interesting looking tools and textures so, these are up my alley.Aside from the lovely visual exterior, these weights are totally functional and worked perfectly in preventing my pie crust from buckling up in the oven (blind bake). I used parchment paper spread across the raw dough in the pie pan, poured these stones right on top of the paper, popped it all in the oven and the crust came out perfectly flat (just like it's supposed to). Be careful, the stones hold onto heat right out of the oven. Ouch. I won't make that mistake again. Just set the stone-filled paper aside to cool down and you'll be good.The drawstring, mesh storage bag is also super cute (even though I keep the stones, bag and all, in a Mason jar).I think these would also make for a lovely gift for pie lovers and bakers in your life.-Lisa

These pie weights are made in the USA by a small company. I followed the directions for use and they worked perfectly. They filled a 9 inch pie shell. The weights will vary in size and color because they are handmade. I ordered these pie weights after reading the reviews and communicating with the owner of the company about the negative reviews regarding lack of color variations. I wanted to ensure that the pie weights sold through Amazon were the same as the ones sold through their website. He assured me they were the same and explained there may not extreme color variations due to the different clays used. I would recommend these to anyone looking for pie weights that are good quality and made in the USA.

Like some other reviewers, I have to say that I am very disappointed in the lack of color variation and size in the pie weights I received. The pictures show a variety of muted colors and sizes -- something that would look nice sitting in a glass canister on the counter. My bag is almost entirely a uniform grey and all similarly sized. If I put these on the counter, people will wonder why I'm displaying a jar of pea-gravel. There is a good quantity and they are a nice weight and I'm sure they will work great for the intended purpose (just got them today); but I'm not happy that I opted for the pretty weights and didn't get what I expected. Update the photos to show what you're actually selling now compared to when you first listed.

Just posting a picture of the weights I just got. Whatever prior complaints of them all being gray were, it seems the company has listened and fixed the issue. Otherwise, they're ceramic pie weights. They do the job.

The ceramic weights are outstanding! The weights arrived well packaged with instructions which I followed. There was no dust and all whole pieces. I first ordered 4 bags and then ordered 3 more. Easy to use, clean, and store in their beautiful bags. I used beans before I found this wonderful USA made product. I am quite satisfied!!!
