I have been using a Sun Joe SJH902E for a few years. It's been reliable, but it's weight is beginning to wear me down so I wanted a lighter unit that I could manipulate easily. The Makita is significantly lighter and fits my needs very nicely. On top of that it's cordless and so easy to pull out to use that I'm able to trim more plants. It's length is equal to the Sun Joe, so I can still reach what I need to. The motor of the Makita is much smaller than the Sun Joe which is key to its lower weight. It also cuts well. For me, the Makita is a much better choice.

This is the best invention I have used for pruning tall shrubs in my garden. Fully adjustable and very versatile. I wish I had found this and purchased it years ago! It really makes hedge clipping so much easier and it's infinitely adjustable. It does require some strength while using it in difficult positions, but it is well worth the effort. Also, It's very powerful and my 18 volt Makita battery is more than ample to accomplish the pruning tasks that I have. I always keep a second batter charged and ready for use if need be, but I haven't had to use it to complete the pruning tasks I have. Great also for pruning cotoneaster ground cover.

I was very surprised to find this product is QUIET. It it easy to use and cuts well, but be aware that it is heavy. So far I have found it to be very high quality. It took me forever to choose which brand of battery-powered tool line to invest in. I am very happy that I chose Makita.

I primarily use this for trimming off bigger weeds and small sprouts on a bank that's too steep to mow, and cut back unruly shrubbery. It's good for cutting back blackberry briers without having to get close enough to be scratched. It doesn't seem to drain the battery very quickly (5 mAh. size, usually). Could give a neater cut if it were sharper (I don't know how to sharpen it.), cuts are sometimes a little ragged. Cut rhododendron stems that are about pencil-sized (and not hardened off) pretty well, has some trouble with burning bush growth same size. Safety switch is a little hard to use. When fully extended, it's hard to get good controlled cutting since the balance is shifted. Would buy again (the batteries are horrendously expensive-I already have several, which was a deciding factor).

We have a small 100 x 100 ‘ yard surrounded by a chain link 4’ fence. Outside of the fence are hemlock, forsythia and ivy 8’ tall hedges. We try to cut and trim the hedges to keep them from growing over the fence and over growing the yard. For many years I have used a cordless Makita 2’ trimmer to reach over the fence and cut the sides and tops of the hedges. Not sure if I am getting shorter with age or the ladder is getting shakier but it’s getting harder to reach and cut the hedges. Tried a landscaper and he did OK but charged $ 450.00 for a half hour job.Saw a neighbor cutting low hanging hemlock branches with a pole chain saw and looked for a pole pole trimmer. Found the Makita pole trimmer, and as I have used Makita tools for many years thought I’d give it a try. Love It !It’s a little heavy and unbalanced but it cuts great and keeps me off the ladder. As I get used to using it , it seems to get lighter and better balanced. Easily cuts 8’ tall 3/8†hedge branches and low branches from bottom of the hedges.Still mostly use the short trimmer for shrubs around the yard but love this pole trimmer for cutting high and unreachable hedges.

Exactly what I needed for my tall bushes and trees. Uses very little battery power. Cuts good up to 3/8" or so. Just take your time on the big stuff or use your loppers.

I just bought this tool and used it to trim two large bushes in the front of my house. They are about 8-9 feet tall, so this extended reach with the telescoping adjustment proved perfect to eliminate the need for a step stool or ladder. Who wants to get on a ladder with a tool that has sharp blades moving over 3k rpm. As a safety feature, I also love that this tool keeps the blades far away from fingers and hands. As usual, Makita quality is second to none. I already have a couple drills with batteries that also work with this tool, so that was easy for me. Great power and really great run-time. I worked for about an hour on those bushes and only spent one block of power on the battery level. As the directions say, don’t try cutting thick branches, you need a lopper for that. For light duty projects like bushes and shrubs this tool rocks and I am very pleased with my purchase.

The weight is light compared to my gas powered hedge trimmer. The sliding extension is very convenient to get to higher or longer reach areas. The only pain, is the safety switch which is not large enough and recessed so is inconvenient for use. However the functionality and ease of use especially cutting tops of hedges on a ladder where weight and reach is important. I would recommend this product.
