The special geometry of the blades guarantees a good penetration in to the fur with proper use, you can effectively and neatly remove around 90% of the loose dead hair with it. Simple application: put on the fur with a subtle pressure, eventually hold against it with the other hand and comb out in the direction of growth (in long strokes) and then remove the hairs from the blade with your hand. Used on a badly matted cat, who reacted as if it was brushing an unmated area. With care the very sharp inner edges cut off the mats painlessly. No exposed rough or sharp edges. Very safe to use.

I have two Cairn terriers, and I use the Mars Coat King 12 blade for their bodies. In fact, I ordered a replacement blade assembly just this week......but this small jewel of a grooming aid, makes it easier to do the tighter areas on my two dogs. The six blades are sharp but not likely to cut their skin, with those blades turned under and presenting an unsharpened “knuckle†to contact the skin areas.Neither of my two Cairns like to have their whiskers and chin area groomed with a wider Coat King, but they do not mind this small one, about 3/4†wide. The featherings on their legs which collect grass and briars are cut away by this, not pulled like tangles and not exerting pressure on their patience!I’m a fan of Mars Coat King products, so I recommend this for your smaller pets either grooming entirely at home, or between trips to the groomer. My babies look forward to some grooming time, it is a positive experience for them.

I bought this hoping that it would help with maintenance on our two Maine Coon cats, who will form matts if not groomed regularly to remove undercoat. We have a small dog-size deshedding tool that works pretty well, and we're hoping this would just give us a bit more fine control for the smaller surfaces on our cats. This has disappointed, though. The design of the tines makes it unsuitable for the coats on these cats, and this thing probably is more for touch up in a very specialized series of circumstances. It is quite fiddly to get just the right angle of attack and amount of pressure for it to actually catch the undercoat.

I got this to help dematt an outside kitty who has really fluffy fine longish fur. It did catch a few of them but his fur is so dense it did not by any means get most of them.Having said that this is a very well made tool and may work for pets with less dense fur.
