i’ve had this for 1 winter and it’s still working and ready for next winter. installation was easy, mostly because of its length.i replaced a more expensive ice dam preventer that was 25 ft which i’d installed 2 winters previous after having an ice dam and dealing with water damage inside my house. (not an enjoyable christmas eve awakening to water dripping out of ceiling light fixtures.). anyway that hotwire started tripping the gfi on its line and was replaced by this one which will hopefully last much longer.

I didn’t use for snow. I used to keep my plants warm underneath frost blankets during a 4 day freeze and 3 days near freezing. Worked really well and I didn’t lose any plants. Be aware that it does use quite a bit of electricity. My bill went from $150 to nearly $300. I would recommend for keeping plants alive if you don’t mind the cost of electricity.

We originally got this heated cable to help with an ice dam we get on the north side of our house each winter. Unfortunately, we're having difficulty getting it set-up because of our metal roof. The included "clips" aren't really useful in our scenario, but I can imagine they'd work perfectly with standard shingles. This is in no way the product's fault, it's just requiring some creative engineering on our part. The cable itself is nice and sturdy and immediately begins to heat up when plugged in. I love the remote control feature as I'm not a huge fan of having the cable on continously when it's not needed. If we're unable to secure it to the roof/gutter, I'll use it to keep snow/ice from building up on our sidewalks or vehicles.

When we replaced our roof, we added some ice dam protection (plastic sheeting going up about 6 ft), but that just prevented the ice from damaging the wood underneath the shingles. We still got ice, as our house is older and the attic insulation isn't up to modern standards. While I plan to upgrade the attic insulation, there was one major issue that had created huge icicles in the past - our gutter downspouts would freeze solid and any melting water from the roof would then collect, freeze, and form the most enormous icicles. So, I used this cable to run down one of the most problematic downspouts. The manufacturer shows this as a normal application, so it made sense to try it. So far, so good! That downspout hasn't frozen solid yet this winter!I took a star off for "easy to install", as it wasn't clear how to affix the cable to ensure it wouldn't just drop down the downspout. I had to get a little creative with the supplied clips.

I got this installed by a roofer that was doing other work and according to him the product is legit. It does work nicely so I guess he is right. It isn’t like it’s hard to install, I’m just not good with heights.
