I have had one of these de-icing cables on the front of my house for a few years and it worked great so I decided to add a few more around the house. I have never had a problem with ice dams but this seems like a pretty cheap precaution especially up here in NH.They provide you with plenty of clips to attached to the shingles and the process is very easy and is a DIY project if you don't mind being on a ladder. It only took me about 30 min. to install the cable.Just make sure you buy the correct length cable, the way to figure that is through some pre-planning. Take a look at the area you are planning to install the cable and take some measurements. You should have approx 2 foot loops about 16" apart, so if you have a 30 length of roof you want to cover your already at 60 ft., you also need to figure in extra cable for a double run in the gutter (if you have one) so if you add the 30 ft. gutter x 2 that's another 60 ft.Then add the downspout, let's just say that another 15 ft. x 2 (need a double run for best results) that's another 30ft. So in total you would need a 150 ft. cable for a 30ft. length of roof with a gutter and a downspout.

We have had two of these on our house, for several years. They have completely eliminated the ice dams and clogged downspouts that used to trouble us. It has been exceptionally snowy, and cold this winter, and the cables have still done the job. One thing to keep in mind is the power consumption. At 5 watts per foot, 50 feet of cable uses 6 kWh per day, or 180 kWh per month. At 20 cents per kWh, that costs $36 per month. To reduce that cost, I've started unplugging the cables when the roof was clear of snow. The reviews on the optional automatic control have been mixed, but I may give that a try, next season.

I liked it, but unfortunately I had to return it, because I needed 60 feet. Make sure you measure your roof line, before committing. I was only a couple of feet off, but from what I've read, there is no way to connect two. The refund process was easy and quick, though.

I haven't had to use this yet, but I wanted to give a word of advice: I was told to buy double the length of the area you want covered. Not even close. I had a 17-foot length of roof that faces north. I purchased a 30-foot length and it barely made it halfway across hooking it up the way the instructions say to do it. I'll probably just buy a longer one at some point and use this one somewhere else. As long as it melts the ice I'm happy.

Used these to deice gutters and downspouts this winter and the result is phenomenal! No more frozen downspouts and even melts the snow in and around the gutters. I did not run these like recommended along the roof in a up and down pattern, I just put them in the gutters and ran into the downspouts to the outlets. They are permanently installed and all I need to do is plug them in when it snows. Very happy.

We live in the northeast and have a flat roof -- a horrible combination. When our gutters freeze up, the water on the roof (which has a parapit wall around it) has no place to go. Eventually it freezes but the ice closest to the warmer house melts during the day and voila, we have an indoor waterfall!!! We put this deicing kit up and down the gutter and around the opening and have had no problems -- except when my son accidentally cut the wire!!Def recommend this product.

The unit seemed fine, I made the mistake of putting it in my gutter before I plugged it in. It blows the GFI outlet whenever it is plugged in, so I had to return it. I would recommend plugging it in to see if it is defective before you go to the trouble of running it on your roof. The unit looked to be of good quality, so maybe I just was unlucky.
