About this item

  • Rectangular shape for smoothing and shaping straight surfaces, with tapered width to ease access in slots
  • American pattern file for non-precision material removal
  • Double-cut teeth on both sides for rapid removal of material
  • Single-cut teeth on both edges for finishing, sharpening, and deburring
  • Tang for use with an optional handle (sold separately)

The Nicholson flat hand file has a rectangular shape with double-cut American pattern teeth on both sides for smoothing and shaping straight surfaces. The file tapers slightly toward the point in width to ease access into slots. It has double-cut American pattern teeth on each side for rapid material removal and single-cut teeth on the edges for finishing, sharpening, and deburring. The tang can be used with an optional handle for secure gripping (sold separately).

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

Very aggressive cut, just what I needed to reprofile an axe.

I have purchased several files over the years in the big box stores with poor results. I just assumed all files were essentially the same. Wrong! Based on reviews from others, I purchased this file, along with the recommended handle. After attaching the handle, I proceeded to sharpen my garden hoe. What an experience! The file dug into the hoe blade with ease--in fact it was actually fun to use. The file took off the edge, leaving significant iron filings with each pass--such a refreshing experience! I have no reason to believe it will not sharpen lawn mower blades, axes, and any other flat metal edge. It is highly recommend.

I should have checked the dimension. It is more the size of a finger nail file. I was hoping for the next size up

I absolutely love my Nicholson files. I used cheapo, made in wherever, files in the past and they absolutely wore me out. I thought that all files were the same and thought why waste money. Well, a friend came by one day when I was trying to file down a piece of tempered steel with one of those cheapo files. He told me to try a Nicholson double cut. I was gobsmacked, the difference in the cutting was night and day. The Nicholson file cut through tempered steel like nobody's business. I'll never go back to cheapo files again.
