I got this tool in advance of doing a front end repair on one of my cars. Finally, when I went to use it, the first side came apart using this tool with almost no effort. Then came the other side. I wound the jacking screw in until it was tight, then proceeded to add about another quarter turn, followed by another quarter turn. No joy. I then gave it one more go of doing the same and now it was really tight. I grabbed a hammer to give the steering knuckle a whack but right before I did that, the two pieces came apart sounding like a shot had been fired. I always leave the ball joint nut on for safety so there were no issues. The tool did great. I don't know how I could have gotten those two pieces separated without it.

I will never use a pickle fork for anything but pickles. The "pickle fork" for separating ball joints and tie rod ends usually tears the rubber boot on the part. As long as I am planning to replace the ball joint it doesn't matter. But, if I am separating a ball joint to remove the axle only, and then reassemble the suspension using the old ball joint, then I certainly need a tool that won't damage the ball joint. This tool does that. I didn't have to apply much force to separate the ball joints, so I don't know how much force it would take without breaking, but it worked quite well on the Mercedes.

This tool is a good value for $26 but you need to do some work prior to first use. I was unable to twist it by hand due to damaged threads and filth from the machining process. Here are the steps to make it ready for first use:- Wipe off the black debris then soak the scew in a solvent such as kersoene, mineral spirits or paint thinner.- Dry the screw and repeat until you see the no more filings.- Chase the damaged threads using a 1.5mm thread repair file - General Tools makes a nice one for $10.- Cover the screw with a light coat of machine oil. Then you are redy to use. After this process it was very easy to move the screw with very light finger pressure. If it does not move by hand, you do not have the threads clean.I used it to remove tie rod ends and ball joints from a Honda Odyssey. A 24 mm ratcheting wrench is ideal for turning the screw. Do not use an impact driver - slow and easy until you hear a pop.I struggled with giving this a 5 star review considering the prep work needed. But you can not beat the price, so a little work was worth it.

Too small for a 2022 Honda Ridgeline (a mid size truck).
