Ordered this to replace the pump in my wife’s 2012 Malibu and I’m glad I did. No worrying about dropping a bolt in the timing cover since it’s a full circle and easy to install. Included bolts are c clipped in to insure they don’t come out. Only gripe in the price. Someone’s getting rich off this thing. But it works like a charm!

This will keep the chain from rotating and hold the gear in place. (Note that the water pump gear isn't driven by the timing chain, but by the balance shaft chain. The Ecotec engines have two chains up front.) Pros:The "tunnels" through which you access the gear bolts are deep, making it really difficult to drop one of them down into behind timing cover. The half-moon tools do not have this feature. It's still best to pack the socket with vaseline or grease, or use a magnetic tool, to remove the bolts. If you drop one, you'll probably have to remove the crank pulley and timing cover to get it out. (Depending on where it landed.)The screws that go into the water pump gear are attached to the tool itself permanently. There's some sort of spring / lock washer arrangement that lets them move, but they won't fall off of the tool. So, when you need to use it again in ten years, all the parts will be there.Full-circle design covers the entire water pump access plate area, so other bolts and sockets that get dropped won't wind up in the wrong place.Cons:It's unfortunate that you're having to perform this service. Whoever at GM decided that a chain-driven water pump was a good idea should be publicly shamed, and possibly flogged. It took me two hours to change the water pump on our 6.2L Escalade. On my Solstice GXP, it was closer to 10 hours. Should you commit to this task, I wish you the best of luck. Godspeed. For context: I have pulled the engine in this car in less time than it took to do the water pump with said engine IN the car.

I've only used it once on a 2007 Pontiac Solstice 2.0L engine. But I can tell you it saved my God father alot of money. The dealer ship wanted to charge him $700+ dollars to replace his water pump. Me being a professional automotive technician, he gave me a call to inquire about replacement of his water pump. Book time calls for 4.9hrs, I completed the job in a little over 3 hours. This tool is awesome for what it does. The timing chain did not move during the job. There is a similar tool which is like a half moon but I choose not to purchase it due to other reviewers saying they dropped bolts in the engine & had to tear down front timing cover to retrieve those bolts. Overall all I would suggest this tool for this job.

This tool is needed if replacing only the water pump on ecotec engines. Be careful not to overtighten to the gear.Important!!!. It is critical the tool is tightened in such a way that the gear will not move. DO NOT overtighten. If it moves even a small amount, the timing chain tensioner will ratchet out behind the cover, and upon starting, there will be a whining noise heard. Unlucky me must’ve bumped it, despite torquing. If this happens, you must remove the timing cover, and reset or replace the lower timing tensioner. Do not run the car, as the chain is over tensioned, and you run the risk of damaging the timing system.Be careful when performing this job. Have a magnetic 10mm deep well at hand as well to ease bolt removal and installation.

Must have if you are replacing water pump on an ecotec motor. Do NOT buy the partial tool, you will drop a bolt into the timing chain and regret it. Taking the timing cover off is a pain. If you drop the bolt in it may go all the way into the oil pan. If it goes into the oil pan you will not be able to get it with a scope with magnet attached. If it falls into the oil pan it may not fall to the bottom of the pan. The pan is bi-level. I know this from experience.

The Ecotech engine uses the timing chain to drive the water pump and this is an essential tool for replacing the water pump correctly without having to remove the timing cover and chain components. Attempting to do the job without this tool could result in an improperly tensioned timing chain and possible catastrophic engine failure. Unless, of course, you really want to remove the timing cover and related components just to replace the water pump. This tool works perfectly for holding the water pump gear and timing chain in place while replacing the water pump. It is much better than the half round version by Lisle tools, as I have used them both. With the OTC tool in place, removing and replacing the water pump gear bolts can be done without fear of dropping the bolts inside the timing cover. The Lisle tool could let a dropped bolt slip by it resulting in having to remove the timing cover to get the bolt out and lost labor time.

good quality tool, well priced. Very fast delivery!! :) works perfectly, don't hesitate, just purchase it.. the bad is the water pump only lasted 2 months, and I had to go and purchase another one (not from Amazon) so I had to pay extra, plus labor plus coolant.. good thing we had the tool which works good. but the water-pump was not good.Rating is for a poor quality water-pump
