How to Plant Bare Root Strawberry Plants

Cold hardy strawberry plants and heat tolerant strawberry plants

Step 1: Check Outdoor Temperatures

If your outdoor temperatures are above 85°F or below 32°F, start your strawberries indoors for the first two weeks. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions over the course of a week before planting them outside.

Strawberry plant soil for compact soil and loose soil

Step 2: Proper Soil

Well-draining soil is extremely important! We recommend mixing at least 30% sand into a high-quality base soil.

Starting strawberry plants by planting them indoors is recommended for certain temperatures

Step 3: Starting Indoors (if needed)

In a cup or pot, plant your strawberry so that the soil reaches the base of the crown. The crown begins where the roots meet the upper portion of the plant. Burying the crown can significantly increase the risk of suffocating the plant. Firmly press the soil down around the edges of the cup or pot to encourage water runoff, and water gently. Place the pot in a sunny window and water every 3-4 days, or whenever the top 1/2 inch of soil feels dry.

How to Plant Strawberries Outdoors

Step 4: Planting Outdoors

Plant your strawberries in raised rows or mounds. As explained in Step 3, be careful not to bury the crown. Generally, strawberries should be planted 12–18 inches apart, with rows spaced 3–4 feet apart.

These are beautiful plants. I did lose one to frost but the rest are doing great in my greenhouse. The photos are right after I planted them. I’ll try to remember to add an updated photo of their healthy leaves. I ordered them in winter, planted them in a sandy mixture, covered them with a frost cloth and they have their second set of leaves coming on after about 60 days. This is the middle of winter here so I’m very happy with their resilience. My greenhouse is not heated. I just keep the frost cloth on.

They came in a very secure package with quick delivery. They were in a lot better health than any other strawberry starters I've purchased over the years. Even the small ones still had green leaves on them. I put most in my hydroponic system but the extras I threw in a grow bag and all have done well so far. Not one died and they even sent a couple extra i assume in case anything happened to one or two in transit. Definitely with the money and if I decide to expand my out door strawberry patch I'll definitely buy again!

I ordered 5 roots in early January for my hydroponic tower. They kindly sent 7 bare roots that were in great condition. I put them in my hydroponic tower after storing them in the refrigerator for a week. It is now February 25th and they have grown very well. I currently have 32 strawberries and 3 of them are starting to get red, I can hardly wait to eat a fresh sweet strawberry. I hand pollinate with a small paintbrush since the tower is in my living room.I highly recommend this grower

Ordered a 10 pack of these. First off they sent 12, which is great. They were well packaged, and all root systems were intact and the crowns looked good. I am trying a new hydroponic countertop garden. The pictures I have posted showgreat growth after being planted for four days. All plants arrive in a timely mannerand in healthy dormant condition. Can highly recommend this grower!UPDATE. New pics added, now 14 days after planting in my hydroponics garden. Great growth and now the first flowers and strawberries growing in 2 weeks. Hearty plants!

Would have received a 5 star rating because of quick shipping and all strawberry roots look great, but no planting instructions and no response from the seller when I reached out to them for instructions.

These are great! I planted these indoors on December 1 and I have strawberries ready to pick. First of all, you can't beat this variety. They're extremely hardy and they produce large, delicious berries. Secondly, I've bought twice from this seller and each time I received a few extra plants, but even the smallest plants grew.

Great product! I received 28, instead of 25. Planted and had new green leaves within 3 days. Actually, after 30 minutes in soil, the bare roots acclimated quite nicely and began to spread out and you could see the yellow green parts opening. It was fascinating! I recommend this product. I will buy again.
