About this item

  • Mother of Thyme, also known as creeping thyme, is a low-growing, aromatic perennial herb native to Europe and parts of North Africa, thriving in well-drained soil and full sun.
  • Its tiny, oval leaves and delicate purple, pink, or white flowers make it a popular ground cover in gardens, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies.
  • Historically, it was used in folk medicine for its antiseptic and respiratory benefits, and its name "thyme" derives from the Greek word "thymos," meaning courage or strength.
  • Easy to grow and drought-tolerant, it’s an excellent choice for rock gardens, pathways, or as a lawn alternative, spreading slowly to form a dense, fragrant mat.
  • Quality: All Creeping Thyme seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
  • Quantity: Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.
  • Packets: Each seed packet displays an artful illustration of the variety to be grown, as well as detailed seed sowing information on the reverse side. They measure 3.25" wide by 4.50" tall.
  • Promise: Seed Needs will never knowingly supply GMO based seed products. The vast majority of our seeds are open pollinated & heirloom, with the exception of a few hybrids.
  • Germination: Seed Needs packets contain some of the freshest seed available. Direct from the growers. If sown correctly, you will begin seeing results in only a matter of days.
  • Freshness: All Creeping Thyme seeds are packaged in tear resistant and moisture resistant packaging. This keeps the seeds a whole lot fresher than the competitions selection!

Grow Mother of Thyme, Creeping Thyme from fresh Thymus serpyllum seeds. Mother of Thyme is a low growing herb that produces masses of beautiful purple flowers. Each branch bares clusters of roughly 10 to 20 flowers atop slender stems. The plants are compact, forming stems that lay down to trail the ground beneath. Each plant grows to a mature height of only 3 to 6 inches tall.

Mother of Thyme is often used as a groundcover plant because of its fast, trailing growth habits. The plants can cover a large area with a few thousand seeds and will flower a few weeks later. Mother of Thyme is popularly sown in rock gardens, along borders, fences & walkways, in containers & pots, or directly in the garden. This versatile groundcover also looks great when grown between pavers and stepping stones as well. The uses of Mother of Thyme are endless.

Grown as a perennial flowering herb, Mother of Thyme will establish a deep root system. This allows it to grow vigorously through the summer months, later wilting with the first frost. Mother of Thyme then returns the following year from its deeply established root system.

Mother of Thyme is known to attract an array of beneficial insects. Some include butterflies, bumblebees & honey bees as well. Large Blue butterfly larvae in particular, will find this plant very tasty and use it as a food source.

sowing the seed

Sowing The Seed

Mother of Thyme seeds can be sown indoors or directly outdoors. If you don't mind transplanting this plant, sowing indoors, in peat pots is recommended. Sow your Mother of Thyme seeds directly to the surface of the soil, allowing direct light to reach them. Do not cover the seeds with soil. Transplant outdoors when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. If sowing directly outdoors, scatter the seeds to the surface of the soil, on a calm day, allowing direct sunlight to reach them.

growing conditions

Growing Conditions

Creeping Thyme will enjoy an area that receives full sunlight for the majority of the day, but it can also tolerate partial shade as well. Sowing in temperatures of 68F to 75F is best. Mother of Thyme is not too picky when it comes to soil conditions and can adapt to sandy, poor or fertile conditions. Just be sure that the soil is well draining. To increase drainage, we recommend adding a light compost to areas containing hard, compact soil. Water daily with a light mist setting so that you do not disrupt the seeds.

germination and growth

Germination & Growth

Your seeds will begin to germinate within roughly 7 to 10 days after sowing. The plants will grow anywhere from 6 to 12 inches tall and can spread a good 18 inches wide or more. The plants can be spaced about 12 inches apart from one another. Once established, your Creeping Thyme plants will produce beautiful, lilac purple blooms throughout your garden. They can be used in rock gardens, along fences, walkways & driveways or around stepping stones & pavers.

Good percentage germination vs other seeds I've bought on Amz which had poor or no germination.

I'm experienced at gardening. These seeds were planted in seed trays, with good planting medium, and cared for meticulously. The small number which germinated resulted in weak, non-viable sprouts. Worse than the loss of the money paid is the loss of time. Don't buy these seeds.

Needs some patience. I started these outdoors about a month ago, it will take time for them to grow but so far so good.Update July 2024.The heat killed them all off, but that's my fault for not watering the regularly. Looking to try again.

I've ordered so many seeds on amazon that didn't germinate. These did germinate! And, the plants are thriving! Thank you!

I planted these seeds in the same plot, at the same time, as several other similar types of seeds (from a major supplier) with the same sun & water requirements. ALL of the seeds but these have done well and the now mature plants are absolutely beautiful. Not one of these seeds even sprouted, let alone grew into the creeping thyme blanket I envisioned. I am very disappointed.UPDATE May 22, 2014:While none of the seeds came up when I planted them last spring (2013), they did come up this spring (2014). I now have a lovely blanket of thyme that is starting to creep beautifully & fill in around other plants, just as I had originally pictured. No blooms yet, but I have high hopes. I have no explanation for the year delay but am happy with how it looks now. I raised my 1 star to 2. I would have given more stars if the seeds had grown when they should have.

Very easy to start. Nice looking plants so far. The package says 80% germination rate, but I think I had close to 100%, or at 100%. I start seeds in soil filled cups/containers and cover with rubber banded plastic wrap (stops gnats and almost all seedlings like humidity). These seeds need light so make sure you don't cover them with soil.

Germination rate was very low....very few plants for the number of seeds planted...will see how they mature and spread.
