Great heat mat thermostat. We lost the original and ordered this replacement. No problems after a year of use. Just pulled it out again to start another batch of seedlings.

My house is pretty chilly in the Winter from January through May during the indoor seed starting season. I have a small table in front of a window. It has a heating mat underneath a 1020 size garden tray where I start my tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, petunias, and other veggies and herbs. These plants need a head start indoors to grow into seedlings big enough to plant out into the cold frame in March and into the garden in April and May.Seedlings that require warmth, like watermelons, tomatoes, eggplants and peppers would never germinate near my cold drafty window without having a warm heating mat to help them get started. This heat mat thermostat helps to keep the temperature of a heat mat steady by turning the mat on or off depending on what temperature you’ve set. The thermostat has a temperature range from 40-108°F, It can be used with a standard heat mat or a high-heat mat (good for watermelons!)I use a temperature of about 75-80F most of the time, but slightly higher for cucumbers and watermelons. It depends on the temperature of the room. When I setup a heat mat in an unheated sunroom, I turn it up a bit more. This thermostat was easy to setup and the controls are simple to use. Just plug it into the wall, and then plug the heat mat into the thermostat, then set the temperature. If the seedlings haven’t germinated in about a week (and you haven’t let them dry out!) then turn up the temperature one degree at a time. Remember that the seed pots will dry out more quickly when using a heat mat - never let the seeds dry out or they will not germinate. This thermostat works just as it should with my heat mat, and I would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to save money this spring and grow their own veggie seedlings!

I ordered this for some seedling heating mats that I have that do not have built-in thermostats and which warm-up to only one temperature. I have found that some seedlings need a bit more or less heat than others, so this seems to work as advertised. You connect your mat to the thermostat and stick the probe into the soil of the seedling tray.Programming is simple and the included instructions explain how to do so, Just a few items of note if you decide to order this:- The instructions indicate that the probe should not be immersed into water. It should go into soil only.- You should not exceed a total of 1000 watts of heating devices into the thermostat.- If your mat cannot supply enough power to get as warm as you’ve set on the controller, then the controller cannot increase the output of the mat.- The thermostat is not waterproof, so if you are using it in a greenhouse make sure it does not get wet from watering.- The thermostat has a built in non-replaceable fuse. If the fuse is overloaded, your thermostat is toast. I wish they had made the fuse replaceable.- I find it odd that the temperature control range of the unit is different that the temperature display range.Other than my minor nitpicks it is a decent thermostat controller for the price. I just wish it had a waterproof rating and that the fuse was replaceable.

I grow tropical plants, starting them from seed, and the temperatures here even in the greenhouse do not stay high enough for good germination. I have used a heat mat for years but it often gets the soil too hot for my seedlings so I just leave it off if the temperature is not too cold. When I saw this I just had to try it and I am NOT DISAPPOINTED! Today was a warm day and the greenhouse temperature was 82° F, accurately read by the probe. But when I stuck the probe in the soil, it slowly dropped down to 75° F. I set the desired temperature to 77° and the heat immediately came on. Slowly the heat mat did its thing and I could see the temperature rising until it got to my desired temperature and then the heat automatically shut off, exactly as it was supposed to. PROBLEM SOLVED!The only negative is that the instructions tell you to insert the probe in the soil about 1 1/2 inches, but in the same paragraph it says not to expose the probe to water! You are not supposed to water your plants???? I think that must be wrong so I will see if that causes any problems and update this review if it does. Meanwhile maybe the company should look at this and clarify. For the listed price, I think this little gadget is a bargain and I wish I had found it years ago. (By the way, the photo looks like the LED temperature reading is messed up. For some reason the flashing makes it look that way in the photo but it works just fine.)

I grow many cut flowers during the end of the winter months. I started them for the spring and to plant than when the temps reach 60+. These seedlings require warmth to germinate and constant simulation of those temps. This was ideal. I often use heat mats and have to gauge the temps this does just that. You stick the probe attached to the unit into the soil and it will read the soils temp. Letting me know if it’s too cool or too warm. It is an LED screen with digital readings. Allows me to adjust the ideal temps or what I’m looking for. F/C deg readings chose what’s best. Light to indicate that my heat mat is on and heating. Temp controls and diff ranges. Two quotes one plug and one probe. The cool thing is you can hang this unit too so it’s out of the way and doesn’t get wet during waterings. It can be used for seedlings as I do or for any animals or reptiles that require a warming tank/heat mat. It’s a safe way to confirm the temps that’s ideal for such situation. I love it. It’s easy to work read and generally accurate. Small in size and hangs so it’s out if the way.
