The soft and medium-soft strengths vibrates easily and allows musicians who are new to the oboe get a great sound, while the medium to medium-hard strengths are more suited for advanced students as well as most adults. Hard reeds are recommended for oboists who prefer a reed that has more resistance, or who prefer to scrape them to suite their needs themselves. The Singin' Dog oboe reeds are in a whole different ballpark than other "factory made" reeds, the difference between the two will amaze you.

I’ve been on a search for commercially available hand-made reeds with my daughter, who is ten years old and has been playing the oboe for about two months. We’ve tried all the Singin’ Dog, Emerald, and Jones reeds available on Amazon as well as the reeds offered and described by Midwest Musical Imports as appropriate for beginners and those sold by our local shop, Forrest’s.These are by no means the best sounding reeds we have encountered, but she does find them the easiest to play, especially when she wants to extend a practice session a little bit, but can’t hold her embroucher any longer. I’m sure teachers would have a lot to say about bad habit formed by using a reed that is too soft, but I think it is better than resorting to biting, which is what she would be doing otherwise.I’m writing this mainly to offer a counterpoint to the other review, which described this reed as hard and unresponsive. That’s not been our experience at all. My daughter finds it to the the softest and easiest to sound of all the reeds she has tried.

Daughter says quality is inconsistent. She says she can’t hit high notes with most of the samples (6) I bought here.
