I purchased this as a gift for my nephews 5th birthday as he is just now starting to learn how to ride bicycles. The nylon chin strap is fairly smooth and has a foam cushion around it. The elbow pads and knee pads are decent all around though its hard to discern how securely they will stay in place. The plastic shell of the helmet is somewhere between 1/8 and 3/16 thick so in that regard its quite durable compared to a lot of other consumer grade helmets that have only a paper thin vinyl shell around the foam. All in all I'd say its a very good value.

The first thing to consider when shopping for a helmet is the type of biking you do. There are basically three categories to keep in mind: Helmets for road biking (generally lighter weight, with better ventilation and more aerodynamic design), helmets for mountain biking (typically with a front visor for protection and more coverage in the back), and helmets for what I call "commuter biking" (designed for a little bit of everything). This helmet is more for the later.In this case, this one is perfect for my everyday biking. Even if it’s may be not as lightweight as the slim ones used for road biking/competition, it’s still light weight, well vented, and also offers more protection around my head, and on the back of it, which was one of the deciding factors when buying this particular model. Another cool functionality of this helmet is that the liner is removable, which can adjust to different head’s thickness, and the neck strap is adjustable too.Remember also that the best helmet is not only the one that will protect you well, but also the one you’ll wear without feeling uncomfortable. Bought this for my almost 5 year old since we got him a bike for Christmas. It fit him great, and is really good quality. He is not the type of kid to want character or printed things, so the plain black one really worked well. The kneepads and elbow pads were a great addition to have with the helmet. We previously had a really tough time getting him to ride a bike, but with the perfect fitting helmet and perfect fitting knee and elbow pads, he is now excited to ride. They are super good quality and I am sure they will last us a very very long time. It is strong material, and my son says that it is very comfortable to wear. The pads fit him perfectly, And there is room to grow so they will be able to be use for as long as he may need them for. This is honestly just a super good set for a super good price and I would definitely recommend it to any parents who are teaching a child to ride a bike.
