Unlike some others I found this step drill to be perfectly adequate for enlarging holes. I used it to enlarge a hole to 3/4" in a 3/16" mild steel engine mount bracket with no problems or dulling of the drill. As with any drill you need to take time, go slowly and use adequate oil to avoid overheating the drill and work.However... this drill may have problems with STAINLESS steel since stainless tends to display something known as "work hardening" where the contant area of the stainless gets progressively harder as more heat and pressure is put on the drill bit, to the point where if becomes almost impossible to drill. To drill or cut stainless you need to use a low speed drill and lots of oil. I suspect the folks who had problems with this drill becomming hot and dull were just using too much speed and pressure and overheated the work. And as the drilling became more difficult, just increased speed and pressure. Go slow, use oil, have no problems.

This bit bores through wood, Plexiglas, and metal like butter. With Plexiglass, medium speed and there will be no webbing or cracking. With metal, medium to high speed, maybe with some 3-In-1.Definitely a valuable addition to my tool arsenal.

I needed to drill perfect sized holes for a battery block I was building. With this step drill I sized the holes perfectly. Great bit to add to your arsenal. So easy to use and the price was "priceless."

Works great but doesn’t last very long as far as sharp goes especially on steel or iron

Make certain you use a variable speed drill on first slow setting. 3 in One oil should be used. You’ll burn out the tip if you use high speed drill
