Kind of scary lifting it the first time cause of the swaying but it seems like it holds well and went up high enough to fit about my garage door. Installation was fairly straightforward just look at the picture for rope routing.

I ordered two StoreYourBoard Kayak and Canoe Ceiling Pulley System, Garage Mount Storage Hoists in late 2024 for two 10' fishing kayaks.I really like the solid, heavy-duty construction of the pulley system. Installation requires some effort, but that's normal and with ladder, proper tools, and locating the joists, I installed them both with my son in less than a couple hours. The reason I do not give this product/system 5-stars is the rope, which I would describe as a lighter weight, canvas covered variety, similar to a boot lace. Friction between this rope and the metal pulley bracket frayed the rope to the point that the second time I raised the kayak, the rope snapped (see picture of the black rope).I contacted StoreYourBoard in the evening, not expecting a reply until after the weekend, but they responded to me within just a couple hours. In response, they sent two replacement ropes for the systems, but the ropes appear to be identical to what came with the system. In my opinion, the rope is just not trustworthy. From REI, I purchased 60’ of high-quality 5mm rope ($0.50/foot), and I reinstalled the system with this new rope (see picture of red rope). I tested this with one of the systems, and it seems to be working great, so I will purchase a matching rope length from REI to reinstall on the other system. (I’ve got 10’ ceilings and 60’ is more than enough length for me.)Bottom lines are (1) StoreYourBoard is a good and responsive company, and worth purchasing from; (2) the systems’ pulleys and brackets are sturdy and good; (3) I strongly recommend that purchasers upgrade the rope before hoisting your boat. (You don’t want the rope to snap when your boat is raised—mine snapped when it was low and there was no evident damage to the boat.) Even with the out-of-pocket cost for buying the higher quality rope, I still think the system is a reasonable value, and purchasers who upgrade the rope will find the system to be trustworthy and operate exactly as desired.

My husband asked me to buy this so here's his review:I'm a mechanical engineer. Nearly twenty years ago I designed a hoist for our two kayaks and my design is mechanically identical to this hoist from Amazon, except my design doesn't have the safety brake. From some reviews I read I was a bit skeptical so I went to my local hardware store and bought the same, exact parts as before for two more kayaks we bought this season. But the hardware store parts were over double the cost of this hoist so I took a chance and ordered it to compare.Out of the box it looked capable of the job so I set the hardware store parts to the side. I glanced at the instructions to get familiar then set to work. Installation was easy enough. I agree with other reviewers that the supplied rope didn't seem adequate so I used 1/4" nylon braided rope, 50' per kayak, from the hardware store since the same type of rope has worked flawlessly all this time.My new boats hoisted up more easily than with my hoist design since the pulley diameter on this hoist is larger than the hardware store pulleys. The safety brake feature worked flawlessly and makes it very easy to wind the rope around the supplied cleat for storage. Attached is a photo of my two old orange and yellow kayaks on my hoist design and one of my new boats with this hoist. This hoist nicely lifts the kayak up as high as possible.Minor complaint - I do wish this hoists pulleys were made of metal but I'm open minded they'll survive many ups and downs. I plan to return all the parts except the rope to my hardware store. I hope this review helps you.

So I bought another system about 3 or so years ago, and the kayak hung about a foot (or more) lower. I constantly had to duck to walk under it. I couldn't tell you how many times I walked into it.Well recently, I added another car to my garage, and it sits on wheel dollies so I can push it around, being it doesn't run. With that said, the kayak rested on the roof of said car (see 2nd picture for old system). Clearly not ideal. So this item I am reviewing now manages to pull the kayak all the way up to the ceiling, without wasted slack, and works on a nearly identical system.I love it. Very happy with it, and wish I had the space for a second one to run right next to it for my other kayak. Unfortunately, it would in the way of the garage door.

System failed. Purchased July 2024. Failed Feb 2025. String/Rope broke and my single person sit-on-top kayak fell on my motorcycle. Had email conversation with manufacturer and they suggested that my kayak was possibly to big and that I should upgrade to their 3 pulley system. First off, my Perception Tribe 11.5 is only 57 1bs. Secondly, my 2 pulley system is labeled "Heavy Duty" with 150 1b limit, same as the 3 pulley system. They also suggested that I maybe got an older version of the polypropylene rope/cord. They did offer to replace all with 3 pulley system but I just don't trust the polypropylene rope/cord. Manufacturer said they will give me refund. I will look for alternative with either Nylon or HMPE/Dyneema cords which are rated as significantly stronger.

The instructions were very detailed.Product is well-made. Expect to spend an hour or more setting it up. My 10 ' kayak is now hung securely in our garage, it is 6 inches from the ceiling.

This is a nice hoist that is simple enough to fit and seems nice and sturdy but my problem is that you need to be directly under the lock for it to reliably lock when releasing the cord, this is not ideal when used with a large kayak as I have but have still made it work.I am using this for an 11 foot fishing kayak that weighs 38kg/84lb apparently and it holds it fine, I have added some extra straps to hooks on the ceiling as I do not fully trust the lock. It seems to release quite easily when the cord on the cleat is bumped sometimes so want the additional peace of mind.If you are able to pull the cord directly under the lock on this then it is great.
