While it's meant for a larger bore/bell, it can work with medium-bore instruments like my Yamaha. I like this style of bucket mute over the clip-on ones that fit over the bell of the instrument (mainly for small- to medium-bore instruments) because of the sound quality. You can take out some of the cotton inside the mute and pack the remaining cotton more loosely if you want more projection, which is nice. These types of bucket mutes, however, are typically not that lightweight, which is why it's usually made from lighter materials like Aluminum. This style in particular tends to run more on the heavy side, but it's still well-constructed and has good sound quality.

It is. It's a bucket mute. It fits larger horn, like my conn 88h. sounds great, stays in place. Hasn't fallen apart yet and it's been a few years.

What prompted me to order this mute was a demo video where I heard its delicious, haunting tone color. I checked out videos of other bucket mutes, and neither the Humes & Berg, SoftTone, nor Soulo mutes had the same delicious tone. I figured that the overtones of the mute will be a function of the mute's size, not the trombone's. The mute was demoed on a large bore trombone, so it must have been a TRB-8L mute. I have a King 2B. But I couldn't be sure the TRB-8S would have the same tone.Fortunately, another reviewer mentioned that the TRB-8S and TRB-8L have the same mouth width, so I thought I would order this item and see if it worked on the King. It does. It's awesome. In the meantime, I also got a used TRB-8S. When I compared the two, the S does not have the same delicious tone color of the TRB-8L. I checked their resonances and the tap tone of the 8L is an E, while the 8S is an A a 4th above it. I think that must be the key to the tone quality. One note: the picture shows machine beveling of the edges of the holes. The one I got just has plain holes. Both 8L and 8S stick out the same distance from the bell. The 8L just has a bigger cavity. So I'd recommend even if you have trombone with as small as a 7 3/8" bell as does the King 2B, to get the larger Jo-Ral TRB-8L.
