Used to boost the gain on my EV RE20, a big dynamic microphone with a -60db bias. My Focusrite Scarlett provided 56db gain or so, not quite enough. The Fethead is commonly used to provide additional preamplification required to make these mics usable with Scarletts; I see no reason it wouldn’t work with other USB amps, or anywhere else a constant ~20db gain would be welcome. The unit plugs in in-line via an XLR female input and male output, and is powered off 48v phantom power. It doesn’t pass the input signal without power, which is a feature for me—a kind of poor person’s mute. It works most anywhere in the signal chain; I have it plugged into two patch cables running to the mic and the Scarlett, but it works equally well plugged in at the input or output end. Do what’s most convenient physically, considering that it will add about 3†to the connector assembly wherever it’s inserted. All in all, this is a well-manufactured product with a durable design. It’s ideal for adding gain to a big dynamic mic like an RE20 or an SM7, but it will work wherever you need a constant gain boost and have phantom power and XLR connectivity.

I have bought this with another (cheaper brand) to do a side by side comparison of the two... The cheap brand did work, and worked as expected not bad... But there is something about the Fethead that makes it my prefered (of the two). Both are very clean and boost the signal quite well, but the Fethead has some characteristics to it... Nothing to drastic, but very ultra subtle, that makes it seem better?I can't confirm what is going on beneath, but I do know that these are ultra great alternatives compared to the pricier "Cloud"... These could be placebo for all I know, and maybe I'm favoring the Fethead, but in reality, you might have better components etc in the Fethead vs the cheapos. Again I cannot confirm. It just works and works very well boosting the dynamic mic input gains drastically without adding extra noise. You will need a 48V Phantom mixer or capable interface.

I got this for my SM7B in lieu of a Cloudlifter. As best as I can tell, it sounds identical, looks better, and is way more convenient. You do not strictly need a booster for an SM7B if you have a halfway decent preamp. I noticed that the booster was able to lower the noise floor by a bit in all circumstances, but only made a very significant difference when increasing the preamp (Behringer UMC404) gain above 90%.Definitely recommended if recording particularly quiet sounds or recording far away from the mic. Also recommended if you are making money with your recording setup. Nice to have but not strictly necessary if you're on a tight budget.

This does not work with my mic. Make sure it's compatible' before you buy.

I love it. It adds almost 30 dB of gain... using it with my SM7B going into my Apollo and it gives exactly the right gain and it’s clean. It uses phantom power to boost dynamic and tube microphones.I LOVE IT

Simple plug and play, and instantly makes my Rode Pod Mic useable. I have a Focusrite Scarlett Solo (3rd gen) and basically had to have the gain set at 100% before getting this. Now it's maybe at like 65% and sounds great.

I have heard great things about this product the only issue I have is the item I purchased was not present, but it did contain the instruction manual, mistakes do happen, my product is showing as undelivered yet so hopefully this will be resolved. This product adds gain to a dynamic mic before the signal reaches the audio interface.
