I have played trumpet for almost 50 years now, and I am a full-time professional musician, so I have used many mutes in my life of varying quality. They have all worked, so I took it for granted that all mutes work, even though they have varying sound qualities. After trying this one, I now know that not all mutes work. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, but I think it is poorly designed and won't let enough air out because the bore is too large.I tried the mute on both of my standard B-flat trumpets. One is arguably the best horn on the market, and one is a plastic model that I got for casual travel, so top end and bottom end horns are represented in this trial.Things started out okay, as I started at middle C and played two octaves up and down again. No worries. But here's where the problems started...going down, the B, B-flat and A got progressively muddier and hard to play. A-flat, G, and G-flat/F-sharp, which is the lowest standard note to be played on a B-flat trumpet, were impossible to play. Strange sounds came out. I couldn't believe it, as this had never happened to me. I tried repeatedly to play appropriately in the lower register and had the same results. I switched horns and had the same results. To try to salvage this defective mute, which never should have left the factory and been sold for the purpose of muting a trumpet, I removed the corks that hold the mute in place and moved them toward the open tip of the mute in hopes of letting more air out. This didn't work either. The way I see it, what is the point of having a mute that won't let you play all of the notes the instrument has to offer? Buy something that works.PS, the only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is that the mute works on some notes. But do yourself a favor and choose something else.

This is a very small, cheap mute. The aluminum is soft and thin, so it had a couple of small dings from shipping even though it was wrapped and boxed. My Bach trumpet absolutely gobbled it up, making it very difficult to play when fully inserted. It fared better on a pocket trumpet, where more air was able to make it out around the sides. It IS inexpensive, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it even for a beginner. I'd spend a few more bucks and get something useful. On the plus side, I'll be able to experiment with this by maybe drilling a hole or two and seeing what happens.
