I purchased this water heater anode rod to replace an almost new Reliance magnesium anode rod I had installed just a week before. Right after I installed the magnesium rod, the hot water developed a strange, almost metallic smell that quickly spread throughout the house. The smell began within just a few hours after I installed the rod and within 24 hours it’s intensity had increased to the point that forced us to turn the water heater off.I searched for hot water smell issues online and almost all websites I researched suggested an Aluminum/Zinc alloy anode rod. I searched a few sites and Amazon had the best price of all and two-day shipping, so I ordered it right away. I had to wait almost three days to get it, so in the meantime, I bought a gallon of peroxide at a local store and added about five pints of the stuff directly into the water heater. The peroxide didn’t completely get rid of the issue but made it much more manageable and tolerable.I received the rod around 2:00 PM this afternoon and installed it almost immediately. I used plumber tape on the rod’s threads, about five turns, although some people think it’s the wrong thing to do. My thought is that the threads will cut through the plumber tape anyway and will not have an impact in preventing metal to metal contact between both the heater and the anode rod, which is necessary to ensure proper reaction. Anyway, removing and replacing the rod is a very simple task and takes just a few minutes.I took a shower around 9:00 pm or seven hours after installing the new Aluminum/Zinc alloy anode rod and there was an obvious change to the quality of the water…there was hardly any smell. We also used the hot water on and off before I took a shower and have a hot water recirculating system installed, so I’m sure most of the water left in the tank from the previous magnesium rod is pretty much depleted. Nevertheless, everything appears to be working just right and I just hope it stays that way. So far, this Aluminum/Zinc alloy anode rod is doing what is supposed to do well and for that reason, IMO, it deserves a five-star rating and I recommend it.8/13/2018: It has been two days since I installed this rod and I'm happy to report that all smell from the hot water is completely gone. There are no leaks either, so that's also a good sign. I would like to add that when I received it, the rod was about three inches too long for my water heater. I simply cutted off those extra three inches and it fit just fine.

This rod met all my expectations except it did not remove the odor from my hot water, through no fault of the rod, just wasn't compatible with my water chemistry so I replaced it with an electric unit and it works great.

Worked GREAT to get rid of the bad bad rotten egg smell I have had for years. Never knew that the Alum & Zinc combination would fix the problem, but it did. 100% would recommend. Came shipped in a tube with a wooden staked taped to keep from bending, smart idea. I cut it down to fit my 25-gal tank, easy job.

The rod is as advertised with the exception that it did not help with removing sulphur smell. Water still smelled after a couple of weeks of usage until I shocked the tank with bleach. Hopefully it will maintain the odorless condition now.

Superior to the original OEM anode. Much longer, dual composition (aluminum and zinc) vs. just aluminum and significantly longer, so it should perform better and last longer. My original was almost completely destroyed by sacrificial electrolysis in jus 2.5 years.

I would not recommend this product for rotten egg o odor fix. I ordered this based on reviews. However, I wonder with the follow up is months after using it. Exactly 3 months after installing the new rod the rotten egg odor has returned. This rod does not last any longer than the original rod that came with the hot water heater our hot water heater is only six months old, this is only a three month or less temporary fix. Unfortunately, it’s past the period of time to return the item. I wonder if his company truly backs up the claim this fixes the rotten egg odor

Replace my factory magnesium rod because of it making my hot water smell. Within a week the smell was gone.

Had smelly bath water for last few years. Since kids moved out, which meant less usage and water sitting in hot water tank longer. This anode worked perfectly and has fixed my problem.

We had a strong rotten egg smell fom our hot water. We first replaced with a plain aluminum anode rod. Did nothing. So we installed this one. It has been about a month, but the smell is almost gone. Don’t expect overnight results. Very happy.
