Advantage:

1. Wooden Umbrella Yarn Swift ball winder is a great tool for knitting and crochet. The clamp-on base allows it to be firmly fixed at the edge of tables, chairs, benches, or any other convenient locations. Helps to make winding the wool into balls a much easier. They work well with ball winders. The real bonus is that these incredibly useful swifts fold down after use making storage much easier.
2. The craftsmanship on this yarn swift is superior. We avoid wood pieces with scars or blemishes so that our yarn swifts are less vulnerable to breakage and more appealing aesthetically. The ends of metal tying wires are hidden into holes and will never hurt your hands or the yarn.

How To Use:

1, Holds your hanks or skeins of yarn in place as you wind them into balls. 2, Simply clamp the swift onto a table or counter top to start winding yarn neatly and easily.
3, Starting with the umbrella in the down position, place the open loop of the hank over the swift and pull it lightly so the far side of the hank is against the center of the umbrella.
4, Then, use your free hand to slide up the umbrella clamp and open the umbrella to snuggly fit the circumference of the hank. Finally, secure the umbrella clamp in place and then wind away! For added durability, the swift features metal hardware.
5, The metal screws feature a plastic stopper at the end to prevent scratches when clamping the swift onto a table. For best results, use in tandem with the Knit Picks ball winder.

My wife is one of the Queens of Yarnia and she has A LOT of yarn. The problem is that you do not knit from the hank (what they call a bunch of yarn that is not wound into a ball) so you have to wind that hank into a ball or a "cake" (not my kind of cake...no chocolate and no frosting blah)This swift is great as it will fit almost any size hank and then you can use your ball winder (purchased separately) to wind up your ball/cake.This swift is well made and nice looking the only thing that I dislike is that it squeaks because it is wood rubbing on wood. You can use soap or wax to "lubricate" the wood so that it does not squeak just be aware it is a band aid not a cure.

This swift was much needed in my yarn artwork toolbox. I didn't want to spend $100 for a tool that wasn't budget planned and took the risk with this one. It's unfinished, good quality. The only downside, was that I needed to "grease" the rotating spools with coconut oil to reduce the friction and loud squeaking the swifter makes when winding. It was bad enough the yarn would get too tight and cause the swifter to skip and not wind. Other than that, it works great.

It broke within just a few months. The adjustment spool stripped and made a tangled mess of the yarn.

The wooden screw on the bottom will not screw in tight enough to attach the swift to a table making it useless. I should have paid attention to the other reviews!!

Edit: wrapping the clamping screw in paper towel was enough for me to get good clamping force. The swift spins fine, but the clamp was not made with care. The wood screw's diameter is too small for the threads in the clamp body so the screw slips before any meaningful force can be applied. I'll be able to fix it because I have a shop, but you may have to buy a separate clamp to secure it to a counter or table.
