It's really a great $40 speaker. Oops, it's $180? Really?

How Yaesu gets away with charging this much money for a piece of junk like this is beyond me. PLEASE don’t buy it unless you plan on gutting it and rebuilding it.Sure, it looks nice sitting next to the FT-991A. From the front it looks sharp.. but that’s where the complements end. When you see the thing you want to give Yaesu the benefit of the doubt.. I mean.. quality company that makes great products.. they wouldn’t charge me $175 for a $2 speaker.. would they? Then you handle it and realize it’s a large box with a 2.5” speaker in it, and nothing else. No enhancement circuitry, no EQ, no filters, no baffling, no porting, just a junk 8 Ohm speaker in a box.Seriously, I have three different external speakers that I paid less than $20 a piece for. All of them run rings around the stock SP-10.I bought it, was horrified by how bad it sounded, and had to decide between sending it back or trying to fix it. I went the latter route and picked up a Peerless, 2.5”, 8 Ohm, full-range driver, and some speaker box pillow baffling, and rebuilt the thing properly. It sounds ten times better than stock, but still not great. Even with the rebuild I can’t justify the $200 total investment for a speaker that barely performs as well as $20 external speakers that take up a fraction of then space. The SP-10 is garbage.I normally praise Yaesu products, but this thing is junk.

For those looking to add an external speaker to their FT-991 or FT-991A Yaesu makes the SP-10 which is a nice sounding small speaker that will match your rig perfectly. Is this speaker better sounding than the FT-991's internal speaker? The answer for most people casually listening to this speaker would probably be no but really it depends a lot on your shack setup. If you rig is sitting between shelfs that partially block the sound coming from the FT-991's top firing internal speaker then you'll love the sound coming from this front firing speaker. To my ear the sound from the SP-10 is crisp and natural sounding. Also, I was able to turn the volume on my rig up much louder than I normally would while operating without hearing any distortion. For those wondering, the speaker does come with the cable needed to plug it into your rig. The BIG down side of this speaker is its price. I feel like it should cost S99.99 at most but if you want a sweet looking matching speaker for your FT-991 its the only game in town.
