About this item

  • Why choose this yarn swifter - metal parts are thicker and sturdier than wood yarn winder. Dimensions: 21" x 19" x 17". The storage case is 17.5" x 2" x 2" (prevents it damaging in transit and keeps it clean).
  • What's the advantage - can be set up either horizontally or vertically! Better shaped, much lighter than the Wood Swift. Can be kept mounted on a table easily.
  • The table clamp or clip is 1.75" (use it on a table thinner than 1.75"/4.5cm), which holds the swift in place and spins smoothly as you wind skeins. The clamp doesn't love rounded edged table. It stays put fine, but not quite as strongly anchored as on an angular-edged table. Note the clamp will leave marks on a wood table. Cover with something protective.
  • The metal construction means this knitting yarn swift folds up more compact than the wood. It's very light and easy to work with. The end is designed so you can put the swift at any angle you want. Once you figure out how to use the clamp it's easy to set up either horizontally or vertically. The size is easy to adjust and it runs smoothly. If you have limited table space, you can use this hanging off the table, without it getting in the way.
  • The yarn swift tabletop is a workhorse. We have used the yarn swifts with different yarn weights from lace to Aran, and wound scads of skeins of everything from crochet cotton size 10 to a heavy worsted, and it's worked for all. It can rock a little when using the top handle, but nothing to make you discard it. You can use it to unravel sweaters from thrift shops to reuse the yarn (cashmere, wool, alpaca). We unravel the sweater directly to the swift, creating 60" hanks.

Product Description

yarn swift

If want no more snarling up yarn when wind balls off of hanks and skeins, you can use your non-winding hand to guide the yarn coming off the swift, and observe a speed limit to avoid over yarn hanging up on the hooks.

This product does what it is supposed to do. It is not the sturdiest swift out there but it is absolutely great for the price. I would recommend for most yarns that are on the market today. I have not used it so far with more than 100gms.

This swift is definitely el cheapo and I do worry that I'll accidentally break it, but it's been working for me for years. I feel like it's relatively fragile, built similarly to an umbrella, so it's super light weight and compact.I wouldn't use to it help me unravel a sweater or anything that would put too much tension on the swift, but for winding a skein to a ball winder, it's great!

I recently bought hanks of yarn for the first time and had to invest in a swift. This one is fantastic, mount is sturdy, didn't move around on my table, umbrella style adjustment that's easy to use. I like that it came in a storage case. I used a yarn winder that I had already and wound 8 cakes in no time. I had always avoided buying hanks because I thought it would be such a process to make them usable but with this, it's a piece of cake! (pun definitely intended)

This is worth it. I wanted more expensive, pretty wood one but this gets the job done while also allowing me to get yarn I want. I needed to be strategic and not spend my budget on a yarn swift and winder. I worried that I would regret it but it is excellent.

So I've been knitting for over ten years and finally decided maybe it would be easier to get a swift instead of using my knees to hold the yarn while I wind. But also, I didn't want to drop a ton of cash if I ended up not being into using one. So I decided to get this to try it out before getting a more expensive one.I don't need a more expensive one. This one is perfect.Easy to set up, easy to break down, quiet, light, and winds yarn just as well as a swift that costs three times as much. Also if you buy enough yarn it pays for itself in the money you save by not having to have your yarn store wind it for you.I will say it does look cheap. But it operates well, the clamp stays strong, it winds smoothly, and it doesn't take up a whole lot of space when you break it down. Don't let the appearance fool you.

I can't believe I didn't buy one of these sooner. Despite it being cheap and flimsy, it does the job well. No, it's not the beautiful winder that you see at the yarn shop, but it's just right for when you have to wind the yarn balls at home. Added bonus is the slim storage box. It hardly takes up any space when put away. And finally, I don't have to ask for help or deal with tangled yarn as I pull it off the back of a chair. IMO, if you're thinking about buying this, don't hesitate.

I like the way this one tightens to my table compared to another slightly cheaper one I have. This one seems better and smoother to use and the case is a nice touch for easy storage.

Just got a yarn roller and a swift. I'm a brand new knitter, less than 6 weeks since I started knitting, and I was finding rolling balls of yarn by hand to be time consuming and boring. (15-20 minutes to roll a 200 yard ball of yarn from a skein.) I bought this swift and and yarn winder and it made it really easy. My wife and I bought 12 skeins of yarn today and it took me about 45 minutes from start to finish to roll all 12! (Instead of 2 1/2 - 3 hours!!) I wasn't sure about the swift when I was looking online - I thought it was a little flimsy looking but the reviews seemed pretty good and I took a chance on one. It arrived quickly from Amazon and it was very easy to set up. (Basically just pop the top off the container, attach it to a table with an adjustable screw, and the raise it like an umbrella.) When I was rolling the yarn I noticed that different skeins had different diameters. Unlike an umbrella, you can adjust the width of the swift without any problems and it spins very freely. I am very happy with my purchase. The only slight drawback to this swift is that it's just a little tight to get it back into it's blue plastic carry case. If the case was about an inch longer and a 1/2 inch wider it would be a little nicer - but that's just me being picky. I'm very happy with it and I would recommend it to anyone.

Only used about four times. Set up is easy. Better than winding by hand. It does seem flimsy with the plastic pieces, but it's working and hasn't broken or given me any issues.
