Woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of house cats being tortured in my basement. Turns out is was just the motor on my furnaces draft inducer failing LOUDLY. As a part of the startup cycle on my gas furnace, this draft inducer motor drives a fan that creates negative airflow up the exhaust duct so that when the burners light, the airflow goes out the exhaust and not into my house. Without the negative airflow, the furnace will not light and the house gets cold...Once nice thing about the way this failed is that it was very obvious where the noise was coming from. I think if my furnace just stopped working, I would not have had any idea of where to start looking for the problem. So after an hour spent learning about furnaces and what the motor was that was making all the noise, I jumped on Google, looked up my model number and found the correct part number for the draft inducer motor. A few clicks later, I find the part on Amazon and within two days the part is on my doorstep. (I did call an HVAC person and was quoted $500-$600 for the motor and I did not ask what the labor charge would be)Product was a perfect match for my furnace. Install took about 30 minutes and was not difficult on my Carrier Weathermaker 8000ts. Make sure to preserve the fan from the original draft inducer and get a new gasket or buy high temp silicone to create a gasket. This is important so that when you put the new motor in, you create the seal that prevents carbon monoxide from coming into your home. Also, these motors come with various specs and connections, make sure you get the right model for your particular furnace. The picture may look the same, but make sure you match your part number.
