The Burpee Self-Watering Seed Starter Tray with 72 cells is an excellent choice for gardening enthusiasts. The self-watering feature is incredibly convenient, ensuring that seeds receive consistent moisture without constant monitoring. The 72 cells are perfectly sized for starting a large variety of plants, making it ideal for both beginner and experienced gardeners. The tray is well-constructed and durable, with clear, easy-to-use instructions. I’ve noticed faster germination and healthier seedlings since using this tray. It’s a fantastic tool for efficient seed starting and highly recommended for anyone looking to streamline their planting process.

I try to start seeds inside every year, but this is the first year using this system. I needed something easier than I have used in the past. It was an easy set up, but I would pay attention to which way the pellets are laying when you add the water. If they are laying sideways instead of up and down, the expand too much and press against the walls of their cell. I had to keep flipping them in the correct direction. With adding the water to the pellets, evening out the top of the dirt, adding seeds and placing the clear cover on the unit, set up probably took about 25 minutes per tray. Now that they have been under lights for a few days, the self watering seems to be working very well and I already have seedlings popping through.

I had great results using this product - the seeds germinated heathier and faster than with any other seed started, and I credit that to the ingenuous self-watering system. However, the plastic material is extremely thin and fragile - just being exposed to the outside temperature (not in the direct sun) it deformed and became non-reusable. I had to buy a regular plastic planter to replace the original one so I can reuse it, and it's working well.Another thing to consider when buying: They have smaller planters - with 36 and I believe 18 cells, which I should have chosen since I'll never plant seeds at once.

The lid does cause the humidity to increase and the system is fine...good choice...I earlier had a negative comment.

I had great success with this. I scattered a package of black eyed susan seeds on the right side, and purple coneflower seeds on the left. Then I realized that black eyed susan are supposed to be cold-stratified, so I removed all of the seeds I could see, put them in the fridge, and put yarrow seeds in the cells instead. Much to my surprise, 50+ black eyed susan seeds sprouted even without the cold stratification! The purple cornflower were slower, but I ended up with about 10 of those and about 13 yarrow. The only con I encountered was that it is quite difficult to get the seedlings out of the cells when transplanting. They don’t “pop” out as described, and the starting mix crumbles everywhere. My finger often got stuck in the little holes trying to remove seedlings which hurt.

Followed directions and planted tomato seeds right before flying out of town this spring. Left lots of water, heat mat, lights on a timer. When I came back 6 days later most cells were watered and seedlings were up! Works best if you make sure to mix the potting mix or pellets really thoroughly with the water so completely rehydrated before st this whole thing up. Works better/longer for seedlings as intended, but with a big bucket of water you could keep larger seedlings alive. Overpriced for what it is, but I had zero time to fiddle with DIYing it. Clearly you could improvise this yourself.

I purchased another one of these the past spring ('24) and I was absolutely disappointed in it's performance. It never kept the seedlings watered. Ever. It was a completely waste of my time and money. I thought it was working until the seeds sprouted and I removed the humidity cover. The drying out began within 24 hours of removing that cover and try as I might, I never could get the mat to perform.I believe the mat I received this past spring was either very old, or it was a returned kit that someone used and then quickly sent back. If dirt gets on the self-watering mat it causes blockages in the "capillaries" which shuts down the flow of H2O. I'm not certain what happened with the mat but this year's mat never worked, at all. My seedlings went weak and the resulting plants were not able to mature properly in the garden. You aren't supposed to pour water onto the seedlings, nor pour water onto the mat, because it says you can damage the mat. Well, what is a person supposed to do when the mat is defective from the start?I couldn't return it because the date had passed or I would have asked Amazon to replace it.I purchased two of these in winter '23 and they performed perfectly. I had excellent starters which become tall, healthy plants when set into the garden. This year was a disaster.

I am so happy with this tray! It has made things so easy for me. There was one batch of seeds I wanted to get started when things were all still frozen up where I live. So not having to get my own soil and fill the cells was so handy. The "wicking" pad has kept all the cells moist and all my seeds have sprouted and are doing well. The other reviews that say their seeds didn't sprout....come on, you can't blame this product on that. Either you've got bunk seeds or you did something wrong. And as for the people having trouble getting the soil pellets to expand, if you follow the directions they work perfectly! Just keep adding more very warm water and "assist" apart as needed.I wouldn't use this for the rest of my seeds, as I don't mind doing the work myself when the weather warms up. But for when you need the convenience of something like this, it is entirely helpful!I highly recommend this tray. It is easy to use, sturdy, and effective.

Nice size, easy to use. Read the instructions on how to properly assemble and place the mat and it works very well. The dome is meant to rest on top, not snap into place, but if you’re not expecting it or don’t bother with instructions, you might be annoyed. The only issue I’ve had is that because the trays are so large (36 cells in each) transplanting was very tricky. Easily remedied by snipping into smaller sections of cells. Durable enough to reuse for at least a couple of seasons. Really love the mat feature, keeps things moist for days.
